Awsome upgrade!
Hey man, I have a 00 GS400 and am looking to do the exact same thing that you have done or just changing to an after market system. I have been through a lot of threads and get mixed answers regarding this. After seeing your post I know it is definitely possible. I live in So Cali and am not in the least bit savy with wiring or mechanics for that matter so if I were to do this, I would definitely be paying someone to do it. My question to you is, were do I begin and do you have any resources in So Cali for me?

It would be great if any members that have done a non-nav to nav conversion could get together and compare if the wire harness are the same (plugs).
I have been looking for this some time now, for some reason there is a small amount of 01+ GS's in the junk yards compared to the 98-00. I'm not sure if the 98-00 had more sales or its just that not enough time has passed for the 01+ GS's to be showing up in the yards.
Does any one have know if the plugs on the wire harness are the same for the 98-00 and 01+ GS navigation system?

i have a 2000 gs 300 non navi car. i recently bought the 2001 gs400 navi screen, brain(black box) , and the antenna. i took my stock radio out and the 3plugs fit perfect into the bottom of the nav unit but there are 2 more wire harnesses i need to run from the nav unit to the black box in the trunk and 1 more plug from the navi to the black box and im missing those. my nav unit didnt even power on with the 3 plugs plugged in the bottom and the other 2 wiresalso plugged in?? i was told it is powered on by the actual cars wire harness any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

"Since I already had a navi system the original goal was to make the entire conversion plug and play, but due to connector availability from Toyota I was only able to complete half of this goal. The install of the Navigation ECU (Computer) is completely plug and play with an adapter harness but I had to splice some of the connections for display install because some connectors were not available to make it completely plug and play. Everything works as it should except for the tip info screen #1 which calculates the cruising range, distance after refueling, and average speed. I think this is a wiring problem but I need to look into this more."
Krburell,
I've just discovered this post and am in the same boat as some others... my 2003 RX300's 86841-50010 Gen 2 unit has the dreaded "no disc detected" problem. If I can simply drop-in an 86841-50090 Gen 4 unit I think I'd like to do that.
I've heard the 50010 units are more prone to failure than later units and it seems like replacement rather than repair might be the better long-term solution.
In your upgrade post you've said this 50010 to 50090 change is "completely plug and play with an adapter harness." Can you point me to the correct harness to do this? What's involved if I do not have the harness?
After the change, is there anything that works differently/incorrectly as compared to the Gen 4 unit being installed in a 'native' Gen 4 environment?
Thanks! Dave

Thanks! I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around how easy this should be. I'm guessing it's also applicable to a 2001 LS430?
A quick question, though... I have not yet removed the 86841-50010 unit, so by going off photos I've found online the best I can tell is the 50010 has 4 connections and the 50090 has 5. Did I see that correctly? Any thoughts or information is appreciated. What does/does not get connected and is that an issue?
Here's a photo of the 86841-50010:
And here is one of the 86841-50090:
If this works I'll need a Gen 4 disc, too, so I hope to begin the hunt soon...

And still use the built-in screen and controls on my RX300? What units do you recommend?

Thanks, I have read through your other thread, but what about the 4 vs. 5 connector issue as I mentioned in post #39 here? Is the 5th connector for some added feature that wasn't available in Gen 2? Does it simply go unused and cause no problems?

Thanks, all. I'll post back once I've tried it (and also to RX Gen 1).

OK, I received the 86841-50090 Gen 4 unit to replace the actual 86841-47020 Gen 2 unit and yes, I'm here to tell you it is a bonehead simple plug-n-play swap!
It works great, but the only quirk I've noticed is if I select a new background color it only works while the car stays on. When I restart it's back to the standard green background. Hardly a big deal.
Thanks to all who helped me here, I appreciate it a lot!
