Evaporator Canister
Check engine light came on at 90K, just had 90K service at 88K. Tech told me code showed evaporator canister bad. Repair was about $900. Is this safe to ignore, or should I get repaired

It's technically called charcoal canister, not evaporator canister, and yes you should get it replaced as soon as you can; it's an emissions issue and directly related to your fuel delivery system. However, $900 sounds really steep for a replacement of that part. I had mine done for my ES a few years ago, and I only paid around $250 at the Lexus dealership.

I think the mechanic told me it was a p0440 code. We replaced the o-ring on the gas cap. My trusted mechanic told me the code pointed to a problem in the neck of the gas tank, also make sure the cap clicks when tightening

When I went to get my inspection my mechanic told me that there is a recall for this b/c you can get a false cel and all that is needed is a modification of the charcoal canister. Check out this link: http://www.epa.gov/oms/cert/recall/B00006.htm
