Unhappy A Whistling Noise

Hi all. I drive my 98gs400 in the winter here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We get cold winters and lots of snow. The car handles it well and I have snow tires. For about a couple of months now, I have heard a whistling noise from my car located on the passenger side behind the dash. At least that is where I hear it from. It is louder when it’s colder, lower than -15C than when it’s warmer around -5C. It always appears at a cruising speed of around 50km/h to 70km/h. Has any of the CL members encountered such a whistling noise from there car from the passenger side, behind the dash board? It is becoming very annoying when you are driving around 50km/h for a long period of time. I am going to take it in to the dealer next week for a road test with a Lexus tech. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mine does the same thing too. I have a 2000 GS400 and when it is below -10C I hear this high pitch sound. I have brought it to the Dealer but they could not figure it out? but, the sound on mine disappears after the car warms up. Also the same thing with driving around 50km/h to 70km/h the sound was there too.

My 2000 GS400 does the same when its below 0 Deg C. It is the rear differential that is making the noise. The oil used for the rear differential is very viscous thus it takes a while to warm up. As far as I know this is normal. A solution would be to replace the differential fluid with something less viscous, but in the summer time you will be in trouble.
