Default Broken windshield wiper

I was driving home in the rain today and I noticed that my windshield wipers started making a "clunking" noise when they returned to their rest position. After about 20 minutes, the passenger side wiper stopped moving. Great...

Upon inspection, not only could I move the passenger side wiper at will, the arm had apparently sprung up higher than normal, causing it to hit the hood and scrape off a small chunk of paint. Even better... I guess that explains the clunking.

Has this happened to anyone else? How much does a windshield wiper motor generally run?

Try tightening the nut holding the wiper. I had the exact same thing happen this winter and all it turned out to be was a lose nut. You will have to open the hood and probably get an adjustable wrench (since I can't remember the size of the nut). It is a very easy procedure and should be a 10 seconf fix. If you have any questions - ask and I will try to help. Good luck.

Hey man,

A wiper assembly consists of a motor and a transmission. So it may not necessarily be the motor that is the problem.

Thanks StasGS4! The nut was indeed loose, and a few quick turns of a 14mm socket wrench solved the problem. How it got loose, I have no idea... My driver's side was getting loose too. Other people out there should check their wipers to avoid something like this from happening to them.

Now to fix the chipped paint. I guess it's a good thing I recently bought that AutoVisuals paint pen.

i have a clue. has any body noticed that if you have your wipers on full blast and not driving. they make the car shake back and forth. the are so strong. they have alot of power to push some windshild wipers.
