Default How far have you driven on a single tank of gas?

I went to San Mateo over the weekend for Hot Import Nights. On the way home I decided to convoy down with friends that lived in Bakersfield. Since the convoy included a flatbed and 2 more with trailers we couldn't go that fast. Average speed was 60-65 mph, to my surprise, I got to Bakersfield(270 miles away) with half a tank! From there I had to drop by Huntington Beach and Irvine (both in Orange County), before I went home (LA County). A TOTAL OF 425 MILES! That was amazing considering I average about 280 mile on a full tank.

yeah if you drive like 65 you will make it for sure. between san jose and LA i average around 80-90mph most of the time, and sometimes i have to do some crazy passing on idiots. usually i can go 350 miles if i push it.

but usually i just get gas midway

I can't quite remember, but I was around 380 miles when the car was cutting out and I barely made the gas station. I was quite pleased (considering my heavy right foot). I think that was my best.

Well, I haven't just started off to see what I could get out of a full tank, but I have noticed that my 3 gets best mileage around 60-65. Once you cross 70 it starts dropping off. Another thing, and I think it's because of the electronic throttle (but I could be wrong) is that for the 1st car ever my cruise control can actually beat me for gas mileage. My '92 Camry for sure couldn't beat me, so I don't know what else it could be. Maybe all the increased electronics. 12 years is a lot of improvement in cars!!! But if I set cruise at around 65 on a pretty clear freeway, I can get around over 25 mpg easy in my GS3 (and at 6'4" 280, I'm not helping!). So I guess that's around 500 or so miles on a tank, if I were to get perfect conditions for that long and be willing to only run 60-65!

Drove down from Jersey to Beltsville Maryland this past weekend, and averaged about 90-100 miles per hour the entire trip! ( i know, but i hate driving slow!) and to my surprise i got almost 375 miles out of a full tank of gas! usually i average about 235-240 and thats because i gun it almost every change i get..now even more after the srt intake/greddy exhaust!

Made it 408 miles on 1 tank, and upon fill-up I added 16 total gallons (25.5 mpg freeway). Pretty good in my book. Pure freeway cruising at approx. 73 mph with some hilly terrain (and 1 mountain pass) for about 80 miles.

The low gas light came on so refilled the tank shortly after 400 highway miles.

Thumbs up

My current record for my 98 GS400 is 427.1 miles on a full tank of Shell premium last summer when Shell was touting their higher-mileage gasolines. But that was one boring tank of gas because I never put my foot into it. I just wanted to see how far I could go. When I filled it up, it only took 18 gallons, so I know there was still another gallon left in the tank.

Thumbs down Keep gas in the tank

Well, guys, as far as driving on a "whole tank of gas", keep in mind that it is not a good idea to let a fuel-injected car get below about two-thirds empty (between half and a quarter-full) for several reasons...which have been dealt with in other posts.

My run up to Eugene, OR the longest I felt comfortable was getting gas at 434 miles @ 16.1 gallons. If I ran it dry, I'm sure it would be 500+ miles. Driving at 65-70 posted limit on I-5. It is nice and flat out there too.

when i first got the car (2000 GS400) it had stock 16" wheels
I drove from LA to SF 400+miles on one tank.

The car is over four years old now (running 18"x10 on the back)
and I'm mostly city driving getting about half that now.
about 250 to a tank.

Wait a minute-you're doing "crazy passing" at 80-90 mph on "idiots"??
If I'm doing 65-70 mph with my family in my car and you do some "crazy passing" by me at 80-90 mph (thereby risking my safety and others- not to mention your own), then it won't be me who is the "idiot"!
Sorry, not a flame but I'd hate to see you on the evening news some night....

I used to commute 100 miles a day in the counter commute direction on cruise control at a pretty steady 72 (I can't afford any more tickets) and consistently got 22-23 mpg on my GS3. My best run ever of all freeway driving, (I hit the gas station as my fumes were running out) was 497 mi. My fuel gague hit empty and the NAV computer consistently told me I had zero miles to go when I still had at least 3-4 more gallons. "That's normal" said the Lexus service manager
