The battery might explode only if you connect the positive (+) cable onto the negative (-) side of the battery, and the negative (-) cable onto the positive (+) side of the battery. Try it and you will see

I think that if you bridged any ground to the + terminal as you describe, you'd get a big nasty spark regardless of whether the + cable was connnected or not...

Read it again, not if the negative cable is disconnected. That's one of the reasons to disconnect the negative first!

I guess that if you meant: "If the + is disconnected and the - is not, and somehow you bridge (say with an open end wrench) from any ground to the + terminal, BIG NASTY SPARK", then yes, you're absolutely correct.

I came to this thread after doing a search on this very subject.

Can't say that I'm less confused than before.

Just to be safe, I'm going to disconnect BOTH terminal.

(1) disconnect negative, push it out of the way
(2) disconnect positive, push it out of the way.
(3) cover both battery posts with the little plastic caps that came with the new battery
(4) after I'm done, connect the positive terminal back first
(5) connect the negative terminal back.
(6) done.

It can't get any safer than that, right?

Ive always been taught to do positive cable first. Negative Cable last. Id rather have the thing grounded last versus powered.
