Default Harddrive based vs DVD based navigation

Are there any differences between the hard drive based navigation vs the dvd navigation? I am not sure if im just seeing thing but it seems like the DVD based navigation looks better. The quality of the screen looks crisper. Can you change a hard drive based to a DVD based?

thanks
leonard

You are seeing things, they ARE different. The DVD based nav has a bigger (wider) screen, and completely different software to the hard drive based one.

Can you change a hard drive based to a DVD based?
The best way to do this would be to sell the car and buy a newer one!

I don't remember Lexus having a harddrive system. Always comes with the DVD and it cost $250 to upgrade

98-00 have a hard drive system in the truck. Here is a link to one of our CL member's DIY webpage and he has a DIY on updating the hard drive: http://lexusmodz.netfirms.com/

nop, from 98-00 it was hdd base, starting in 2001 together with the gs430 it's dvd base.

the dvd base has bigger screen i believe, and also the dvd has maps for the whole US, whereas for the hdd base it's only couple of states?

The nav systems are definitely different. The newer DVD based one has many more roads and towns covered in detail, and many times more 'points of interest' (restaurants, gas stations, etc.) in its database. I have the older hard drive based system and absolutely love it. I'm not about to trade in my car to get a newer system. Besides, I don't want the GS430 because it lacks e-shift which I use every day, and the tranny programming just seems really conservative. But the interior of the 01+ 430 is nicer than my 00 400 and the new Mark Levison stereo is definitely better than the Pioneer.

well the new nav is definitely a lot better but whether it's worth the extra TONS of money to get the gs430 it's up to you
