Talking Help a soon to be GS owner out, please

hey guys, i'm interested in pickin up a 98-00 GS300\400... my first question is, since 98 was the first year of the 2nd gen, are there any problems with them? where can i find the TSB information on these cars?reason i'm not sure whether i want the 300 or 400 is the fuel efficiency... i'll be driving alot(over 100 miles a day), i know the 300 obviously gets better mpg, but it would be nicer to have a v8... how much hp does the gs300 and 400 have? and how many mpg's do both get(if its close enough, i'll just get the 400)? i searched the EPA's site and they gave different mpg's for each year, so that confused me... another question is, we all know toyota\lexus is number 1 when it comes to reliablity, but how reliable are these cars from a scale of 1-10, in your opinion? and what about driving in the snow(lots of slow sometimes)? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance fellas

sorry to bump an old thread, but i figured i'd save some bandwidth and ask here;

i am now in interested in purchasing or leasing a gs4.. my first question is, what years had navigation and HIDs? what else should i look for? i wanna spend around $25,000 or less, used basically for now.

my next question is, should i purchase or lease? what are pros and cons of both? i don't think i plan on keeping the car for long, just until i can perhaps buy a new GS, or RX(still deciding)..

thanks for the help again

since 98 the gs4 already has the option of nav and hid. i believe most of the gs4 has hid, and nav it's just about your luck

for under 25k, i guess you can try to find a 98 or 99 gs4 with ok mileage

and can you actually lease a used car?! never heard of it before. but anyway, here's a good thread

hey, thanks for your reply. yes you can lease used cars. i'm looking around on autotrader now, i've come up with quite a few results.. i'm just having a hard time finding gs4's with navigation.. after reading the thread about leasing vs. buying, i think i will buy. there are just too many disadvantages of leasing- the ONLY good advantage is lower monthly payments, but on the other hand i know i will drive more than the maximun 15,000 miles\year limit, and i would like to mod it eventually. after all, GS's were meant to be modded

yeah specially i fyou drive more than 15k a yr, loan is probably a better option

anyway, having nav on 98 is defnitely harder. i think on 99 it's a bit more common

good luck on finding the car!

Electronic shift controls on the steering wheel. This is as close to a manual as you'll get on the GS.

They came on 98-00 GS400 (and was removed for the 01+ GS430).
They were also on the 01+ GS300 (and was NOT on the 98-00 GS300s).

doh, that sucks.. i had my heart set on 2001+ GS 430, just having a hard time finding it on autotrader with navigation. what else was different in 01+? how much power did the 98-00 make? i was only able to find out that the 01+ GS 430's have 300hp\325 tq..

and i was also curious to know which motor has more mod potentional(to make faster), when considering a turbo kit and whatnot, the GS300's 6 or the 400\430's 8?

well if your looking for a gs4 for less than 25k u have a lot to choose from. u can find them everywhere with good miles. i found a 2000 silv/blk gs4 with 40k miles for 21k on autotrader when i was thinking about getting another gs after i lost my blk one.. that and the cinnabar with blk interior i found for 18k with 57k miles. man i almost jumped on that one just for the color combo. u can find them very inexpensive if u search online as opposed to going to a lexus dealer where they usually want a lot more, even if it un-certified. good luck

there are just mainly some cosmetic stuff between gs400 and gs430. the engine, no eshift, bigger exhaust tips, chrome emblem on steering wheel, wood steering wheel in most gs430, newer cup holders and chrome shift plate bezel, newer style grille

and depending on how much you willnig to mod the car. if you go very crazy, which means A LOT Of money, you can make the i6 very fast, 600hp. but that's a lot of money for turbo and you need some good tuning. you can get the same power on the gs4, even for NA, if you tune it well, you can get 500rwhp if you want, but that's also a lot of money and work.

if you just want to talk about reasonable amount of money for most people, the v8 has a lot more juice
