Is it just me or is the 19/29 estimated mpg completely false?

For me, personally, I compared the GS450h used prices to a fully load GS350 within the same mileage. With the amount that I paid, the difference was like $4K at most. All the GS350's that I looked at didn't have all the features that the GS450h had that I wanted as well - i.e. LED headlights, Bamboo Steering wheel, etc.
The torque difference between the two cars is big - if you haven't driven both cars, then you're in for a surprise if you try to accelerate past 60 mph and compare them.
Considering that I normally keep my cars for 10+ years, the $4-$5K difference between the used car prices are negligible. I would be able to recover that within a few years and get a true "top of the GS line" model.
Also, there is something serene about coasting slowly and the car being dead silent. Different strokes for different folks .. but calm/peaceful/less noise is a luxury for me (something ultra rich people pay massive amount of money to experience).. so I'm thankful that I get to experience a bit of that while not cringing every time I fill up.
This is coming from someone that owned cars with "fart can" exhausts (turbo setups) and some pure track bred cars as well, but I'm just at a different stage in my life.

What is the life expectancy of one of those battery packs? They are pricey to replace.

Didn't read the entire thread, but I've had my 13 GS for over two years, and the manufacturer's numbers are pretty close. My average lifetime MPG is shy of 24mpg. I have over 27K miles on the car.
In ALL highway driving, I am in the 26-28mpg range, and that's normal steady driving. In the city, I hover around 20. This is after over two years of data. I bring my car in and do oil changes every 5k.

After getting 18-19 mpg on my 2013, I thought it would improve on my 2015. It's been a couple thousand miles after break-in and I'm still getting 17-18 mpg with the 8-speed. It's a mix of city (40%) and highway (60%). Probably doesn't help that I only drive in Sport +. The deeper growl and more prominent engine sounds on the 2015 is also too intoxicating.
The highest I've seen on average was 22-23 mpg. So yes, completely false

I have made a trip to Vegas, and was able to get 26.7 mpg cruising at 75-80 mph. If i were going 65-70 im sure i would be able to get closer to 29 mpg. So i wouldn't say is it completely false. You just need to drive like my grandma.

After just over 2k miles on my 2015 F Sport, my average speed is a flimsy 27 mph, I drive everyday stuck in freeway traffic sadly. It is painful to see such a low speed on such a fast machine.. though when I occasionally get some open road I open it up to hear the engine come alive and easily hit triple digits on the speedo in no time!
Anyways, I currently am averaging 20.7 mpg - so that is indeed within the estimated range and not false at all. If I could actually keep a steady 70-80 mph trip I know the mpg would shoot up to the high 20's easily.
Estimations are COMPLETELY ACCURATE (though still estimations)!!!
What are you averaging now OP?

I'm getting 18.7 with mixed driving (average 26-27 mph).
I was getting about 19.1 with my 2007 LS460.
Just surprised that gas mileage is about the same on a V6 that is 7 years newer.

7 years newer by age, but not by design. I don't know how many miles you have, but I'm thinking the car will hit it's stride closer to 20k miles.
