I'm pretty sure Lexus has tested this 467 hp engine time and time again to make sure there are no engine malfunctions and by putting that RC-F engine and transmission into the GS-F, they can be assured that it would minimize any chances of future recurring problems with the car.
Well, that's one way to see it. Or maybe it was a cost cutting tactic from the most profitable car manufacture in the world--Kill two birds with one stone tactic. Let's put the same engine in halo cars of two separate segments and call it a day. Or maybe it was pure laziness. Let's just put something out there just so we can say we have a halo car in the segment. People have been waiting so long. Let's put two more doors on a RCF and call it a GSF but use the spruced up GS interior. No one will be the wiser. My guess is the combo of all of the above (including your theory too).

Reminds me of all the overreacting that was going on with the RC before it was released. That one seems to be getting good reviews and selling too.

Also, if I want the GS F, I'm getting the GS F. I could care less about what it competes against or whether is has 23 less hp or is .3 seconds slower to 60.
+1. It surprised me to see this many negative responses from 4GS owners. Most if not all of us got our 4GS for some other reasons than the numbers. The most common ones are the nice interior, reliability and how it handles compared to the other guys. A significant number of us never liked how it looked but the design slowly grew on us. A significant number of us have come to a conclusion that this thing is a hidden beauty. At least five members got a second 4GS or two at the same time. We seem to forget all this and get so caught up with some details without even knowing how this thing performs in real life. We sit here and question why not this and not that. Media will say this and that. But the truth is Lexus did their homework and they chose to go this route. They don't just do it. IMO this thing looks more modern and appealing. And like the 4GS, it is a better buy overall. This thing will definitely sell.

The GSF will be a perfect daily driver. It has enough HP, good looks and the lexus reliability. As long as Lexus prices it well, i'll most def be purchasing one.

i never researched on the numbers for m5 and e63, but given that i live in a region where expensive high end cars are not that "rare", i see more m5 and e63 overall than isf. so that might be a hint.

regardless, even if lexus has a car competing with the m5 and e63, there is no way they will sell close to as many cars. and i don't think i have to go into the m3 numbers. but if you think sales number is the metric here i think you are missing the point, because lexus would have lost like that.
The IS F sold less than 13,000 units Globally in its 7 year Fun run.

That comes to roughly 150 units per month broken over the lifespan.
The numbers a bit skewed actually, because the IS F only had one strong selling year back in 2008. With over 4k units manufactured for sale Globally..

Now the 2016 GS F, Lexus announced today on the LiveStream, 1,600 units per year..
Well that comes to approx. 133 units per month Globally...

That is pretty much mirroring the exited IS F sales..

Coincidence..!!?? I think not...

Last year at 14' NAIAS the announced the RC F would have approx. 2,500 units per year..
Which comes to approx 208 units per month..

Only time will tell.. If they ran their numbers right..

Nah, the RC platform is a strange cut and paste. GS front end, 2IS convertible middle, standard 3IS rear underpinning the whole thing. Pretty creative frankenstein engineering. Otherwise you're close.

Same like GS-F styling. RC-F front, GS middle, IS rear

That's an awesome commercial. I hope they show that during the Super Bowl again.

A fully-loaded M4 breaks the $90k threshold so a fully-loaded M3 should be at the high $80s.

more realistic price for the M is high 70s or 80. It bloats past that when you add in the carbon brakes
