Okay all, after 33,000 miles the OEM Michelins are just below 4/32nds of tread depth. This is typically when I consider replacement tires, and after a highway ride yesterday in heavy rain and squirrely hydroplaning at times, I think its time.
I had considered trying to swap the GS for a 2015 (I have a year left on the lease) to avoid having to do this, but doesn't look like that will be cost effective.
I've narrowed it down to three tires, I think. Here they are in my order of preference.
1. Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus ($840 installed) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes
These tires have great reviews, TireRack tests show them as some of the quietest tires on the road today, quieter than the Michelin Premier A/S (replacement for the Primacy MXV4 which is a quieter tire than the MXM4 we have). All in they're about $200 cheaper than the Michelins installed. I drove my old 2003 ES today with these tires just installed, they're very smooth and quiet. Quieter than the MXM4s on my GS now, but they're well worn.
2. Another set of Michelin Primacy MXM4 ($1,070 installed) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes
These tires have served me well, been smooth and quiet, stayed balanced. Treadwear has been good, but they are more expensive.
3. Toyo Versado Noir ($760 installed) http://www.treaddepot.com/tire/136610.html
These tires are brand new, and according to the tire dealer I've used for years they're the tires they would choose except that they don't have them in stock yet. In fact, the 4GS is used in all Toyo's marketing materials for these tires. They're even cheaper still, but I hate to be a guinea pig. Toyo does have a 45 day ride policy, so if my shop got them in I could try them and could always swap out if I didn't like them.
I may very well buy the car at the end of the lease, so I want to get something that will be worthwhile, and in any event I have to drive it for another year, so I want to if anything make it ride/drive better...certainly not detract from it.
What do you guys think? Haven't seen a lot of tire replacement threads so I assume I'm one of the first, at least for the non F-Sport.
I've had Toyo before but not that one, it was the Proxes 4+ and one out of 4 was deformed (factory defect) and it made my steering wheel wobble. It took me a while to figured it out and thought the car had frame damage or something cause it was lowered and I've gone airborne once on a hilly street , but it's just that one tire. Warranty covered it and I got a good replacement and other than that they're good. That Toyo I got was made in USA, the old Toyos I believe were made in Japan.
I wouldn't spend tons of $$ on tires and I wouldn't buy cheap tires either. Remember the new GS is coming.

Although I don't seem to notice obvious problem with the tires, I'm in the same position as you. It's not cost effective to turn it in at this time. With the deal at discount tires, I think I will take the Michellins. I may too keep the car and wait for something else more interesting if the time frame does not work out. I have a friend who had a Supra before. He always highly spoke about his Toyo tires. Not sure about the ones you posted though. How about Yokohama YK580? Any thought on this?
BTW if someone turns the car in with worn down tire, can dealer charge you for a new set of tires? My friend got charged by BMW when he turned his lease in
Normally they won't bother if u get another car from them. I've returned leased cars with worn down tires and never get charged, this is just turning it in without getting another car. Just leave some thread left, don't go all bald like that.
Or u can keep ur used tires in ur garage and swap them back if u decide to trade it in after the lease. That way u can reuse the new tires or sell them.
Yeah unfortunately we don't have Discount Tire here. The cheapest deal on the Michelins is going to be about $1,000 installed...I don't have a problem paying more for better tires but it really seems like at least these Pirellis may actually be cheaper AND better.
I had a set of Toyos once on my old 03 ES. Proxes TPT. They were okay, but got loud as they got old...
There are a lot of reviews online from people who went from the Primacy to the Pirelli and were very happy. They have excellent reviews from multiple sources, its hard to find any negative reviews...
I'm a Michelin guy too, but I have a hard time justifying spending more for a tire that may not even be as good a tire as the cheaper option.
There's a CL thread under LS for Yokohama. Some went from Michellin to Yoko. I think I'll take Yoko. They would have to order the Michellin and I was told the cheaper (same model) ones are no longer available. Only the 240/piece.
I vaguely recall a couple of months ago looking at tire reviews, and some people said those Pirellis were great at first, but got much noisier once they wore in a bit. I can't remember where I saw that though, if it wasn't on TireRack.

I've read dozens and dozens of reviews but I haven't seen that anywhere...you have to be sure you're seeing reviews for the P7 PLUS, the "P7" is an older tire that has much less favorable reviews.
A friend and I have a running joke where we rate car stuff like this in terms of cups of coffee, e.g. how much does this wake you up suddenly when it happens? That's probably about a four cup of coffee situation.
That is some expensive rubber I personally would get either Pirellis or if you have extra cash, then go with Michelins. Primacy would be number 1 choice though.
