I have no experience with the 8 speed, but I drove the 6 speed. It was great until it hit highway speeds. I'm not that concerned about 2-3 additional mpg. But I found that the revs stayed too high for the car to settle into a smoother, and quieter, groove at highway speeds.

the gear ratios come out to be the same because the diff gearing is different. Both my 06 and 14 IS are at 1500 rpm @ 50 mph in their top gears

Really? I find my 2013 model with 6 speeds to be very quiet cruising at highway speeds, and I've had it up to almost 90mph.

But I can tell this car really likes to be driven hard, it pulls hard from 60 and 70+ and wanted to keep going. All in Auto and Normal mode. I've forgotten how powerful this car is cause I'm so used to driving my parents around in boat-mode, and maybe this is the reason why the ECU fell asleep.

Car feels really alive when driven hard and when it shifts right.
good to hear
usually seems to finishing learning about 200-300kms

I must be the only one who doesn't mind the 8AT.

I guess I must have driven it hard out of the gate (what break in procedure) and it got used to my driving style. Is there lag when calling for a downshift? Yes, but not more than the 8 speed in my 535. I also have driven several 6 speed GS's and found them to be no better, IMO. My only complaint is that it does not lock up often enough or early enough.

I also get about 20 MPG with this car so perhaps I am a bit more aggressive with the throttle?

Yeah...it runs at 2100 RPM at 80MPH...I hear no engine noise. Its very smooth and refined on the highway.

I wonder if there is any difference between the F Sport and non. Hopefully we can actually meet again and find out

If fuel economy were not the main focus today, we'd all be driving 5 speeds and 6 speeds.
I also have a 2011 Jeep GC. I have been dissatisfied with it's performance and wished I had bought a Hemi.....until I test drove a 2014, same engine with an 8sp....very impressed with how much better it performed. I love the 8sp in this 2014 F-Sport. If I keep my foot on the throttle evenly it shifts like silk. Where I do get in trouble is anticipating the shift point and lift my foot as I would if I were driving a manual. In Sport mod it is a rocket. Personally......I love the 8sp.....for what it's worth, and BTW...got 26.3mpg on a day tirp to Asheville this week.

HUGE difference. In the Jeep with the 8 speed you don't even need the Hemi...
