Default CPO Verificatiion

Recently purchased what was advertised on dealer's website and other affiliated websites as a CPO car. Car Fax stated same and window sticker on car stated CPO with 3 year/100K. Closed the deal and then was told car was only advertised as CPO" ready" which my documentation proved not to be true. After providing them with the documentation they realized their error and in an email said that they were sorry for the confusion and would CPO the car. Should I expect specific CPO info to be sent to me and is their any way to check the Lexus database to see if car is listed as CPO?

Met with pre owned car manager today at dealership and he took ownership of the problem, given all the documentation that I presented, and stated that it would take a week or so to correct the problem with Lexus. Claimed he was eating $1K.

I am glad he did the right thing.

Every time I read a story like this (or some variation of it) I wonder if the source of the problem is shadiness or incompetence. "CPO Ready" doesn't mean anything to the average buyer; when people see "CPO", 95 times out of 100, that is interpreted and commonly understood in one way, so the mere use of the "CPO ready" terminology raises questions. I'm not suggesting that anyone played games in this particular case; I'm speaking more broadly based on similar stories I've seen (and a series of less-than-stellar CPO experiences for me and friends across multiple manufacturers).

This dealer does quite of advertising cars as CPO ready which means it passed the inspection and they could CPO the car if buyer wants to pay for the warranty. For some reason they screwed up with this ad, which I kept a copy of, and advertised as a CPO car with the 3 year no deductible 100K mile warranty.I also found the window sticker in back seat of car that had box marked indicating CPO and full warranty. No way they could get out of it. They were not happy today but did do the right thing but I am sure someone is going to catch hell. Now I just have to wait about 2 weeks for process to be completed. Have a case/reference number with Lexus Customer Service and they are awaiting the outcome. They said that I should receive something in mail with CPO certification soon if dealer follows through.

That's a very interesting strategy; I wonder how many other dealers do this and how it pans out for them to try to upsell customers on CPO vs. actually doing it upfront. I guess they are betting that the mention of CPO will, in itself, make the car just as attractive, but at that point, why would anyone buying a car that is still under 4/50 opt for CPO when they can buy an extended new car warranty? This is a different discussion, anyway...

At any rate, like I said, I am glad they are owning up to it. Enjoy your car!

I have never really heard of CPO ready most of the dealers here in MA sell with CPO unless its basically a fairly new car like when the 13 GS was in pre-owned in 13' Interesting that they would sell it like that as some people would not catch it.

Note in description "cpo ready". They screwed up with the ad for my car.

Thats pretty common. Theres a dealer here who's cars are always a little cheaper than the other dealers, but when you look closely you realize that their cars are not CPO...

Had the same EXACT thing happen to me. I ended up filing a BBB complaint and still didn't get the CPO that was advertised and stamped on the carfax. I ignore carfax since the information they produce isn't accurate and their fine print says they're report isn't worth a damn and there is nothing you can do about it if its inaccurate.

What a convenient 'mistake'. Sounds like something they probably do all the time and customers don't catch it most of the time... $$$$
