If the engine is shut off with the shifter in neutral, as it probably was to go through the car wash, the switch never turns "off" but rather goes to "accessory" mode. At that point, you can step on the brake and start the engine without the fob being present. I actually tried this (completely unaware of this post) on Saturday in our loaner RX.

That sounds like my situation. Here, to go into the car wash the car is placed in neutral, at least that's what it looks like. When the car is completed the attendant gets back into the car and 'starts' it, taking it to be dried. Sounds like this may be what happened.
