Is he saying that the engines don't last as long in those vehicles as they do in a Lexus application?
Here is a link to what someone at Edmunds recommends as a general approach:

My wife has an RX, it only requires 87 so premium won't make any difference. You said it right bigblack - it wasn't your car so you didn't have to care.
If the car is yours, just use the manufacturer rated fuel, they recommend it for a reason. The computer will compensate for lower octane gas but if you plan on keeping the car don't use it too often if at all.

Edit: just read the comments above, they must have changed it, didnt know they changed the gas will check the next time.

Little OT here :P When I drove my Nissan Maxima, it required premium. If I put anything else other than premium it would ping under heavy acceleration or up a steep hill... It is known that pinging is detrimental to the engine...
Now with the IS and ES I have not tried regular to see if they would do the same, i.e. ping...

gas question? super or regular on the GS?
i've always used premium gas on every car i've owned and when i bought the GS F-sport the dealer told me no need to use premium and said its ok to use regular grade. He mentioned these new lexus engines are ok with this... What grade of gasoline is everyone using?

I wouldn't consider using regular on the GS with direct injection. Premium here.

Pole Position
Premium. Even says to use that on a label inside the fuel filler door on mine. The dealer is kind of right in that the engine is "ok" with regular, in the sense that you won't damage anything by using it. Unlike the bad old days when detonation from too low octane could destroy the engine. But premium is what this engine is designed for, and it won't perform the way it should if you give it lower octane fuel.

I just tried a tank of regular in my GS. I got 26.1 MPG, the same as with premium gas. I could not detect any difference in power, but I drive very conservatively.

Shame, shame! You're not supposed to produce empirical evidence. You're supposed to regurgitate conventional wisdom from two decades ago. Prepare for your spanking...
