Will (can) jeans discolor the tan leather on the new 4GS?
Hey folks,
Hopefully this is in the right forum - this might be a general Lexus question though. Apologies in advance if the mods have to move it.
Anyways, here's my question. I was speaking to a neighbour about my impending 4GS purchase, and he mentioned that he's stayed away from tan leather because he has young kids, and the blue on their jeans rubs off on the leather. He's had BMWs mostly. I did some searching online and some people have complained of similar issues on Hondas.
I'm wondering if this is a general problem with all tan leather, and how much of a concern should it be? The 4GS tan leather is a bit darker than your regular tan leather, so hopefully that helps.
Any thoughts or experience you have would be appreciated. I might go black just in case...

We had tan leather on a GX 460 and ES, no issues. However, my wife had an IS 250 years ago that did have a bit of "blue" on the seats. I think it was most likely damp clothes (from rain, etc.) that lead to some fade on them. I would not hesitate to get tan again (wife's new IS 350 has tan, no issues).

Recovering Lexus Addict
I've seen this evident on light colored leathers, like the old ecru leather on LS430s. There may be differences in normal v. semi aniline leathers in the dye transfer. I suspect it would be worse on non-ventilated leather when the heat and sweat build up.
Some may say who would be so gauche as to wear jeans when driving a new Lexus.

I had asked a similar question over in the detailing section of the CL forums. Most folks there strongly suggested the use of a leather sealant / protector - especially on lighter colored leather. They suggested "Leather Master Protection Cream"

on semi-aniline seats probably not, but frack, i did not notice that my jeans had very sharp stiching on the back, and I managed to damage my light gray semi-aniline seats, simply scratched it (i am 240lbs so my entry is not really light)... however after 3 years of use, i see no dye transfer on the seats for sure.

Thanks all, your responses are appreciated.
I guess for now I won't worry about it, and I'll protect the leather as well. The darker tan shouldn't be an issue I hope.
Most of the other cars we've had have had black leather - but I never noticed a "blue" issue on our '94 4Runner (tan), '00 LX470 (tan), or our '09 LX570 (grey). That being said, two of those cars belonged to my mom and she rarely wears jeans.
Can't wait to get the new car. I hope the broker can finally get me a date - for now it's "May".

i have an 02 RX300 and yes, the blue jeans kinda stick into the leather, especially the driver seat. but i think its more bcoz i didnt clean my RX as much as my GS. since it never happened in my GS.

I had a 1999 RX300 many years back and I did notice blue stains on the tan leather after several years.
No stains on the grey leather in my BMW or the parchment leather in my LS though... yet?
