Option 1) Here is a youtube video I made to show the "more involved DIY LED fix method" and the techniques I used.



The clear epoxy I used to secure it to the inside needle plastic is a product called "The Amazing GOOP". It comes in a blue, toothpaste style tube and is easily removable. It can be bought at Walmart, Home depot, or Lowes hardware. The "Amazing GOOP" in the purple tube is black in color from what I remember. I used the clear for my needles.

Thanks Kene! Just now getting around to doing this! You the man, only thing i think you could have elaborated on is the resister purpose, and install other than that bravo! You should make a bunch of working needles and then sell em on here lol! I would pay to save my time !

Thanks Train, prob take you up on the needle repair, how long is the turn around time considering this is my daily beater? Or if you come across a set of gs300 first gen spare needles you have repaired and are sitting on em let me know.

No i am looking into LCD replacement for my AC/Heat gauge? I can only see that when it is hot, you have any tabs on that?

Sounds good Jason, just ended up on your website. My next question do you have an option or an idea on the LCD panel for the climate control upgrade for the first generation GS300's i have not been able to locate the right part, or info.

I did find out what LED replacement bulbs are needed for the Climate Control Unit which are three different sizes, also going to take some soldering efforts for the Pioneer unit, which may have to stay incandescent bulbs.

UPDATE: 12/5/2015 - For the record, the LED needles are still running strong without a single instance of dimming or going out. Brightness is still the same as the day I installed them. This is for all 4 needles. Keep in mind this is a little more than 1 year they were installed.

UPDATE: 5/15/17 - Was just asked about how the gauge needle LED's were holding up. And for record keeping purposes, they are still running just as bright and good as the first day I installed them. No lie. I would take a pic but I am at the office at the moment.

For the others who are also asking. Here is a summation, that will help.

The onchip LED's I used are these, And I believe I listed the quantity needed in the post. I would order about ~225 of these just to be sure for the 1st gen GS300 needles.

There are several other onchip led ,amufacturers and types. And various colors can be bought from digikey, but I think the GS300 needles themselves have red clear plastic in them. So you will be stuck with only red.

And for the 15 ohm 1/8th watt resistor (through hole type), you will need 1 per needle. I would get 6 or 7 just in the case that you mess up snipping the ends too short. These will work below:

If I had to do it again, I would use a 15 ohm surface mount resistor, as it is even smaller and has less weight. Granted, I have no issues whatsoever with the 1/8 watt size resistor.
Here is a roll of 5000 15 ohm 1/10th watt surface mount resistors for $11 USD.

(Keep in mind in the example below, the through hole resistor shown is way larger than the 1/8th watt resistor I used originally)
