Engines/harness
So I'm thinking about getting a new engine in my 93 gs300. I was wondering could I do a 1jz? If so will I just need to get a custom harness? If I get a engine from a 161 is it also a harness? Or should I just got with a 2jzgte?? Anybody know of a good place to get the harness built?

You can do all three of these swaps but each of them require harness modifications.
a 1jz would require front sump oil pan, motor mounts, your GS accessories (alternator, A/C and P/S pump) and wiring. (lengthened and repinned, most likely you'll have to do a patch harness of sorts.
a 2jzgte vvti (161) which I just completed requires motor mounts, your GS accessories (alternator, A/C and P/S pump) and wiring. The wiring is complex and I posted pictures of it in my build thread. Pretty much a patch harness like the 1jz requires, except this motor has drive by wire throttle body and requires you to keep the throttle body if you have an OEM ecu. This means you need the ETCS-i to properly work and be wired correctly. Pain the hell swap but I love mine.
a 2jzgte (147) motor that came out of the car is the easier swap, you don't need to mess with a wonky throttle body and the harness plugs are correct, but the harness needs to be correctly lengthened.
There's a lot of little things with each of these swaps that add up. I would say the ball park range is 4500 dollars + to do completely.

I paid $735 for a harness conversion from panicwire.com
I recommend him over other places but there is also Tweaked Performance in Arizona

Tweakd is in North Carolina. I've had mixed results from them. Quality work and all new wire and connectors but they almost always mess up at least one circuit. I'm going to try panicwire next time as the prices are similar and he has a better reputation.

Just an update: My car has been running great ever since. Been 7 months solid. Previously I thought that i had to get the diagnostics from the ecu, but he actually wired it to work with the stock diagnostics port under the steering wheel (i didnt even know it was there LOL!).
Make sure to request if you want new clips or what have you. Very happy with the harness and even had Panic check up on me to make sure its going good throughout.
