Default New fuel pump? What do you suggest....

Just bought my 1993 lexus gs 300 one week ago. Drove home good. Went shopping and car dies. It will crank, fire up then shut right back off. After several starts, it will eventually start and idle. Anything off an idle it dies. Put in new dist. cap and rotor. Car seemed good again and then back to the same. Oddly it would run and drive good on occasion then go back to not wanting to run. Seems like a fuel issue. I cannot find anywhere on the high pressure fuel line to check pressure. I was gonna order a new denso pump on amazon for $120. Is there anything else I should check first?

Check engine light comes on and goes off- jumped the diag box and got code 12- something about an rpm signal. Not sure if it relates.
I did bypass the fuel pump ecu to eliminate that possibility. Still the same.
Car has 229K. Thanks
