Default Transmission question

I'm in the market for a GS and I went to look at a 95 with 125K on the dash. Overall the car was in very good condition. There were some minor cosmetic issues that need to be addressed. While in the car I cycled through the gears, going from Park to Drive. When I put the car in reverse the car sort of jerked. When I put the car in Drive, there was also jerking. While driving the car, the shifting was smooth. Is the jerking a tell tell sign that the car may have transmission issues? The fluid wasn't low and there was no burning smell. The car has been sitting for a couple months awaiting a new owner. Could this be culprit of the jerking? Or are the two not correlated?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

the jerking is usually because the transmission is cold and vehicle is cold. allow it to warm up close to normal operating temp and should be ok that or you can try installing an aftermark transmission cooler

It can be or your transmission mount or engine mount may be worn or gone.
I don't know what kind of "jerking" you are experiencing. So I can only guess.

I will say this, when I did the same thing in my 97 Avalon with 256xxx miles on it, there was no jerking. It's jerking when I switch from Park to reverse or Reverse to drive.

I'm going back to look at the car on Sunday. Can I, having no mechanical know how what so ever visually inspect the engine or transmission mounts?

Ive got the same issue with my 93. It only jerks when its cold or when u first start it. In my case, its because of the high idel speed when u first start it up in combination with a bad transmission mount. Runs about 1400 rpm then drops down after its warm then its fine. im gona fix mine, just havnt had time.

It has to be the mounts because mine jerks all the time wether it's warm or cold, and if the car isn't on neutral or park it will shake a lot

Im going with the tranny mount, if you say the car shifts fine while driving, if it was banging through gears when you where driving then Id say its the tranny..The tranny mount is pretty damn cheap to by, and if u have some mech skills u can do it yourself w jack stands, a jack a socket wrench Im sure...good luck...and keep us posted...

I'll tell you what it is now. TPS needs to be adjusted.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is TPS?

Throttle Position Sensor. It sits on the throttle body.

It's a really common issue for us SC guys too. Like it clunks like crazy when you go from Park to Reverse right?

That's exactly what it's doing. It does the same when you go from reverse to drive. Would it still be the TPS?

hmm.. makes sense.. When you shift from park, the ECU may think you are on stepping the throttle because the TPS is bad.

wow. interesting possiblity, and it ever crossed my mind.

Good deal. I will inform my mechanic to check out the TPS and Engine/Transmission mounts. I hope one of those two are the problem. I really want this car. I've been looking for quite some time.

Cool if it solves the problem, you owe me lunch

Yeah the SC guys didn't know it for awhile until I brought it up lol. I'm a mechanic by trade so I kinda keep up with these things.
