Distinctive European design heritage and a powertrain shared with the sporty SC 300 Sport Coupe mark the Lexus GS 300 as a touring sedan combining luxury, performance and handling agility. For 1996, an innovative new 5-speed automatic transmission, combined with other drivetrain revisions, provides the 1996 GS 300 with improved acceleration and passing performance.

A first for Lexus, the 5-speed automatic A350E transmission is virtually the same size and weight as the previous 4-speed transmission and is standard equipment on the '96 GS.

Thanks to its close-ratio auto-shifting gearbox and revised final-drive ratio, GS 300 acceleration from zero to 60 mph has improved to 8.3 seconds, with a quicker zero to 1/4-mile acceleration of 16.3 seconds. Top test track speed is 144 mph. In keeping with the Lexus philosophy of performance with efficiency, fuel economy has improved to 18 city/24 highway.

Design Freshened for '96

The GS 300 provides a unique combination of distinctive Italian styling, responsive handling performance and luxury features and amenities. The GS shape was originally developed by master designer Giorgetto Giugiaro's ItalDesign Group as the Kensington, a concept vehicle which debuted to acclaim at the Geneva Auto Show. With further development by Lexus designers in Japan, the distinctive shape was introduced as a production vehicle to the U.S. in 1993.

Exterior appearance refinements have freshened the GS for 1996. The rear combination lamps, rear panel and badging have been updated for a cleaner look. Lexus factory chrome plated wheels are available as an option, and feature exceptionally deep layers of plating to meet stringent Lexus standards for corrosion and chip resistance. Five new exterior color round out 1996 visual enhancements.

Powerplant

The GS 300 is powered by a 3.0-liter, 24-valve in-line six-cylinder powerplant with an output of 220 horsepower and 210 ft.-lb. of torque. This engine utilizes a wide range of Lexus-developed technologies to produce high output for its displacement. The inherently smooth in-line six configuration is further enhanced by exclusive friction-reduction technology as well as liquid-filled engine mounts.

5-Speed Automatic Transmission

The new 5-speed electronically controlled transmission with intelligence (5ECTi) provides close-ratio gear changes by adding the fifth ratio between the former first and second gears. As a result, the previous 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears effectively become 3rd, 4th and 5th speeds. Overall acceleration and passing performance is further improved with a rear axle ratio change from 4.083:1 to 4.272:1.

While very few carmakers offer 5-speed automatic transmissions, the Lexus design is unique in that it is essentially the same size and weight as the 4-speed automatic which it replaces.

Competitive 5-speed automatics employ an additional gear set to the transmission, making it necessary to increase size, weight and manufacturing cost. Because a larger, heavier transmission would partially defeat the advantages of the additional gear ratio, Lexus engineers sought a more elegant solution.

The A350E uses advanced computer software development and new hydraulic control methods to shift the transmission's overdrive unit in synchronization with the gear changing mechanism for its three main forward gears.

In the case of the A350E transmission, a new second gear ratio was created by engaging the overdrive gear in tandem with the first gear. The new third ratio is produced by using what was previously second gear, without overdrive.

While the concept is a simple one, it took sophisticated application of new control systems to insure smooth and reliable simultaneous activation of two separate gear changing mechanisms. The advancements were recognized in a technical paper presented to the Society of Automotive Engineers (Paper #920610).

The GS 300 shift console has been slightly revised to take advantage of the new 5-speed transmission. In place of the previous "2" indicator, an "S" position can be selected for driving on sloping grades when a lower gear is desired.

Chassis

While the sporty GS 300 is also a luxury sedan, its mission is to provide responsive handling performance which belies its roominess and comfort. Four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension, gas pressurized shock absorbers, and special rear strut rods combine with carefully selected anti-dive and anti-squat geometry. Vehicle-speed sensitive progressive power rack and pinion steering teams with subtle suspension changes for 1996. Shock damping, spring rates and suspension bushing values have been retuned to provide more precise handling and progressive steering reactions without sacrificing ride comfort and increasing harshness.

Safety

In addition to performance improvements, the '96 GS 300 body structure has been revised to provide side-impact protection to be required in 1997. The GS 300 continues to offer such standard safety features as dual front airbags, four-wheel ABS, front and rear crush zones, automatic on/off headlamps, adjustable front shoulder belt anchors, and front seat belts which pre-tension in the event of an impact.

Features and Equipment

Several thoughtful improvements enhance a long list of standard interior conveniences, including audible confirmation for the keyless entry system, a standard rear-window imprinted mobile phone antenna replaces the previous external pigtail type and a one-touch slide open function has been added to the power tilt and slide moonroof.

Other standard GS features include dual power outside mirrors with defoggers, automatic light-sensitive on/off headlamps, Lexus premium audio system with seven speakers and 225 watts, outside temperature gauge, power tilt and telescopic steering column with automatic tilt-away, remote entry system integrated into key handle.
