Default Navigation Update...worth it?

Is it worth updating my 2014 maps to the 2016? Don't know if anyone has experienced any major differences?

Assuming it is just a maps database update, the only difference will be updated road details. The actual UI won't be updated as part of a maps database update. The updated details of new/updated roads may help you find more efficient routes to your destination

The whole updating NAV thing is a conundrum, because outdated maps are not all that helpful, but Lexus makes it so expensive, and we all presumably have viable alternatives such as Waze and Google Maps. Prior to my GS 350, I had a 2010 RX 350 which had outdated maps, and I was able to do an update for around $200 with the purchase of the maps and the labor to install. That was a "good" deal IIRC, and even that is a ripoff. With my GS 350, I use the NAV from time to time, but use Waze more often due to better traffic management living in the NYC tri-state area. I likely won't be spending the money to update my GS 350 maps anytime soon, unless Lexus makes it more affordable.

And bear in mind, that even with Lexus's updated maps, they are still likely "behind" from the most current conditions anyway. Just my .02 cents.

Ditto - I can't remember the last time I used maps on my car's nav. Google maps is so much more accurate, and provides lane level instructions, and free traffic information etc, and so much easier to enter destinations.
I wish I could slap a table over the screen (except it would end up looking terrible) - and just use Google maps instead.

I would suggest you look up your state/area in the release notes located here to see if there are any updates to roads near you, then you'll have a better idea if it's worth it or not.

Updates are $210. Details here.

Unless you have major (or significant to your route) new construction it seems superfluous to pay for the update.
This thread covers the fact that phones are more up to date regarding business names and phone numbers that
also come with the update.

If you set up Lexus App Suite (free forever) and log iHeartRadio into it you can play radio and your phone will
segue seamlessly between Waze directions and phone calls. Be sure to be charging with the 12 volt plug and
not a USB jack because the jack only has 500 milliamps (.5 amp) which Waze will exceed.

You don't need installation. For the new ones with the SD card, you simply pull out the old one and put in the new one. They post the directions on the navigation site and explain that you can do it yourself.

Can I install a navigation update?

Yes, some vehicles are accessible enough for customers to install the update. Your dealership would be best able to advise you if your vehicle is one of those.
How to install:
1. Turn car and ACC power off.
2. Push plastic cover below nav display to release the cover and show the Micro SD map location.
3. Push the Micro SD card in to allow it to eject (Note the orientation of the Micro SD card as it is removed).
4. Remove the Micro SD card.
5. Insert new Micro SD map in the same orientation the old Micro SD was removed.
6. Replace the plastic cover.

Check the release notes, they have a list of State/Counties and then lower down they actually explain in detail which highway and ramp or cross street that were changed.
I found changes listed in the details in counties that they didn't list above. So checkout the details.

If you can find a good spot for your telephone the "Waze" app is probably the best Nav. product and it is free.
I have used it for over a year and it is very accurate, of coarse it does rely on input from local drivers, here in Dallas Tx is is great.
It is a shame to waste a big screen in the middle of the dash for a phone app but it is a great app.

It might be worth it to some....I prefer actually using the stock navigation unit to a phone. It's at the perfect eye level and the big screen shines in being able to show information clearly. I also have the HUD in my car, which relays next turn guidance onto the windshield.

Don't forget the updated Points of Interests (POIs) you also get with a new map update.
