Hey guys,

I'm planning to do oil change on my 14'. I have been using the mobil 1 0w-20 extended performance on my previous car 12' Camry. So, I was wondering what Mobil 1 type you guys recommend advance fuel economy or extended performance? Or any other brand?

I just changed mine last week similar car advance fuel economy and I'm planning to keep it for 5k miles. My mechanic friend suggested to put heavier oil next time around to avoid the loud engine sound.

I really can't imagine why you (or your mechanic friend) would want to use a higher viscosity engine oil than what Lexus recommends. If you are talking about the noise coming from the direct fuel injection, engine oil has absolutely no effect or control on that noise at all.

I change mine at 5000 miles so I always use standard Mobil 1. I never had a problem with it so I don't think I ever will. HP and EL are more marketing hype than anything else. That way they get you to pay more. I have been using regular Mobil 1 for years and have never had any oil related engine issues on any of my cars. And bclexus is correct. Use only what Lexus recommends for viscosity as this will help to reduce wear on cold starts. If you car sits a while between starts this is even more important.

Zero=Zero for cold starts. What about when the engine is warmed up? What if you need to pass a car & need max acceleration! Do you want 0-20w or 0-30w. My 2007 IS350 speced 0-30w my 2015 GS350 speced 0-20w. I had zero engine problems with my IS350. My 2015 GS350 has the identical engine, why would I want to risk using a lighter oil? Gain 1/2 mpg? No. Most of the changes to engine oil the last 15-20yrs were made to help the environment not engines, especially Mobil 1. Search the internet, I did. I use Castrol Syntec 0-30 every 5,000 miles.

I've been doing a lot of research into this, and have decided that I'm going to go to 0W30 when I change the oil next time in the LS.

The reason for the 0W20 oil requirement change by Lexus is fuel economy, the thinner oil gives them a slight edge there. That's why they've made that requirement change on engines they've recommended other oils for in the past. I have read multiple stories of people having better engine idle sounds when they go to a heavier oil.

The 0 will be the same for startup, the 30W oil is just a little heavier when the engine is warmed up than the 20W.
