Brake clearance - how much is enough?,
I have a quick question on wheel fitment for my 2013 AWD model.
I own a set of 17" Borbet BS5 wheels and winter tires. They've got the right bolt pattern and are fitted with tires of the correct diameter, so I thought I'd bolt them on and see if they worked. (Incidentally, what is up with the jacking points on this car?)
I didn't have the proper hub-centric rings mounted or use lug-centric nuts, because I wasn't going anywhere - in case that makes a difference. (I do own the proper rings and nuts, just didn't put them one for a one-wheel test.)
Anyway, they cleared the front brakes... barely. I rolled the car back and forth to ensure that they moved clearly over a full rotation, and they did. I presume that any wheel capable of clearing the front brakes should have no trouble with the rears.
So I'm left with a bit of a quandary. While they technically fit, it's very, very tight, and I have to confess I feel a bit uneasy about the whole thing. I'm now wondering how much free play I need to make the whole thing work. Does anyone have any guidance on this matter?
EDIT: I did some research, and it seems as though a good distance is about 3mm (1/8"). Rather than attempting to eyeball clearance at funny angles and in bad lighting, I'm going to grab a washer or some sort of gauge of that size and see if I can clear it. If I can, great. If not, never mind.
