agree w/ OP 1000%. there needs to be a top end engine on the IS and GS to compete. There really is no argument here. this engine is 10 years old. We are all fans of Lexus here, yes, but come on, quit kidding yourselves that it's not getting long in the tooth.
It would be one thing if there was a trade off s in lieu of not being the fastest, like better fuel economy, but guess what, it doesn't. the only thing it has for it is "reliability".

I agree. Although the IS and Q50 compete at [roughly] the same price point, the Q50 is actually MUCH larger than the IS and in fact is closer to the GS in size.

I am not convinced Lexus wants to be a performance leader.
In performance terms:
LFA=M3
RCF/ISF=335i
GS350=528i
IS200t= 320i
LFA/RCF serves as figureheads, for a generally lacklustre engine range, to sell on looking fast and reliability, which it clearly is a leader.
But, it's only a real leader if it has BOTH performance and reliability. Otherwise one could say it's just as compromised as the Germans, just in an opposite way.

ISF=M3
GS350=535i
Back when I had an ISF, I also test drove the 335i. The ISF is far superior. It wasn't even close. I did not drive an M3 however.

You do realize that the LFA is completely hand assembled in Japan? It's a limited production supercar that has the reliability of your average Lexus. The chassis and body panels are mostly carbon fiber that were that made using a machine specifically invented to loom together carbon fiber threads.
Additionally, it has a Yamaha V10 engine that is notorious for the best sounding engine to have been made EVER by any manufacturer (supercar or not). It's transmission was one of the fastest shifting at the time it got released. It's an overall amazing performance car that also has a luxurious interior.. trust me, I've driven one.
Anyway, Lexus vehicles may not be leaders in "performance," but I'd rather keep my car on the road as long and as cheaply as possible over being a few seconds quicker than the rest of the competition.
To each their own though,

LOL at those comparisons!
These are a bit more comparable. Some are debatable.
IS/RC200t = Q50 2.0t, A4/5, C300, 320i, 3/428i, ATS 2.5L
IS/RC350 = Q50/60 3.0t, 3/440i, ATS 3.6, C300
RC F = M3/4, C63, RS4/5, ATS V
GS200t = E250 BlueTEC, 528i, A6 2.0t, CTS 2.0
GS350 = Q70, E350/400, CLS400, 535i, A6 3.0t (it's actually SC'd), CTS 3.6
Q50 Red Sport = C450
GS F = 550i M Sport, CT6, S6, S7, CLS550
Lexus and Infiniti have no contenders = M5, M6, E63, CLS63, RS6, RS7
Audi has their own category with the S4 and S5.
