Default Dealer replaced the serpentine belt and oil lines at 40K...

I thought those things usually last longer, closer to 90K ?

I was not even aware that my oil lines needed to be changed. The car was not leaking oil.

The belt first started showing signs back in May, when the car had only 30K. I drove for another 10K with crickets under the hood Finally decided to go to the stealership.

I guess it's something you guys want to look out for when you're at 40K.

What oil lines? To the VVTi?

What belt? For the A/C and alternator?

If you are talking about the timing belt - it is actually a chain on the 4Gen GS 350. And, to the best of my knowledge it never needs replacing and is not in the service recommendations at any mileage, unlike a belt...which is recommended to be replaced in 90k miles or 7-10 years.

If the timing chain had to be replaced I assume it was done at no-charge under warranty...

Maybe the belt they replaced was the rubber belt that takes care of the A/C compressor, alternator, outboard of the engine.

Look at the attachment (below) for the service guide (which begins on page 50). I quickly looked through 120k miles and didn't see anything about a timing belt replacement, which makes sense if it is a chain that should last as long as the engine.

From the service PDF that I was sent:

Engine - Oil Line
An oil line is any type of hosing that carries and
transports oil throughout the engine.

Belt - A/C Belt
An air conditioner belt is a rubber belt that drives the air
conditioning compressor.

Still don't know what oil lines were replaced, or whether they were metal or rubber...and for the engine or the transmission.

Okay, it was the A/C compressor rubber belt, not the timing belt that controls the timing of the piston valves. This is a normal wear item, and is often in need of replacement in 30k-40k miles. The part and labor should not have been very expensive.

Sounds like you taken to the bank. A lot of these dealers have more aggressive maintenance schedules than the manufacturer. You have to be careful with these folks...

Yes, but not without a small fight Initially I was told that this is "wear and tear" which is not covered by the warranty.....

lol thankfully it was. What did you end up saying to convince them otherwise?

I'm really surprised they replaced the belt at no-charge. This belt is like the old 'fan belt' except it's beefier, wider, longer and tracks on more pulleys. Nevertheless, it is definitely a wear-and-tear part that oftentimes needs to be replaced around the mileage that yours did (40k) since it was worn and making noise. There is no set mileage or time interval on changing the serpentine belt. It should be Inspected routinely for fray and crack wear. If it doesn't look good or starts to make noise, it's time to change it.

If my belt was making a noise or the belt looked frayed or cracked I would choose to have it replaced right away...and I would fully expect to be charged for installing a new one unless the car was just a couple years old or only had 20k miles or less on it.
