Angry Thought I bought a CPO car

Well I guess you live and you learn… For the record, this is the first car purchase I've ever done largely on my own but I feel like I was played. I purchased my GS Oct of last year and for the most part it was a relatively painless process. Fast forward to this month I was talking to a member on here about keys and how I was only given one instead of two. He suggested I talk with my dealership and request the extra key since my car was CPO and CPOs are required to have two keys. Well I called the financial specialist last week and left a message and got no answer. I finally called again yesterday and spoke with the guy that was over the sale and told him the situation about the key. His response is that the car is not CPO. What!? I tell him I specifically bought that car because it indeed was CPO and he said well I (myself) opted to not pay the $1000 CPO certification when I purchased it and that's my fault. He goes further to ask why would I even want it since it would only cover 3 years/100,000 miles when my manufacturers already covers 3 yr/50,000 miles. By this time I'm pretty angry. He then tells me I'm basically SOL and hangs up. It's only then that I realize that when haggling the price, they did not lower it when trying to make a deal with me. They dropped the CPO certification and said this is the deal they can get me, without telling me that's what they did. Not once did they ever mention any price for the CPO or tell me it was optional. I went in knowing this was a CPO car and that is what I was getting. I don't think it is fair for them to drop the CPO while not telling me and tell me they are giving me a deal. I don't know what to do at this point but I am going to go in and talk to a manager. Do I have any grounds to stand on here? Are they allowed to do that? My service history even shows the car went through the CPO pre-delivery inspection.

Key words there are "CPO pre-delivery inspection". If they deducted $1,000 because they thought you were declining the CPO designation, it's all moot now, papers have been signed.

Sorry OP. You're SOL. You may try to plead with them about not understanding how they were arriving at their $1,000 deduction and see if, in good faith, they will supply an additional key at no charge.

I've never purchased a CPO, but I would imagine there would be additional paperwork to sign if that deal had been agreed to. Check your paperwork and make sure you're not overlooking CPO paperwork, or declination of CPO.

When i was shopping for my RX350 i saw many CPO's that they wouldn't negociate on but they said they can remove the CPO warranty and lower the price by 1K. I ended up buying at a used car lot and saved way more then buying a overpriced CPO at Lexus. Id rather spend a little more then the 1k that they charge for CPO certification and get a extended warranty instead.

Yea I'm not too optimistic about how this is going to turn out. At no point during the 5 hours I was at the dealership was CPO brought up as optional by the salesman. AT ALL. That's what gets me. I hope they will in good faith but I don't have too much confidence.

Put a review on Yelp, file a complaint with the BBB, and also contact Lexus corp are your only real options. Influence other buyers about this dealer for one. See if they care about their BBB or are even members. And perhaps Lexus will be willing to step in and make you happy since it is their badge on the front and back of your car. Just remember, be polite and firm at the same time. And don't accept no, escalate if necessary.

I wouldn't worry too much about the car not being CPO, with it being so new theres not a ton of value there. The key is $200 programmed.

Sucks though. Dealers always want to do that, thats why they want you to come in...I negotiate everything from the comfort of my office and refuse to come in until the deal is done. When they have you there they can screw around with paperwork and in the moment you make mistakes that you don't make when you're sitting at your desk reviewing things on your own time.

I've had dealers refuse to help me if I won't come in and work out the deal and thats fine, plenty of other dealers.

That is messed up. A lot of dealers do this crap, they kind of hold you hostage with CPO and then raise/lower the price based on it. A lot of CPO cars are crap too, in accidents etc....

This is a shame and sorry to hear this. You should ask to speak to the GM at this point.

The car was traded in with only one key and I asked them if they could provide me with a second key and they were adamant in saying if have to lay for the second one. I've had great service there otherwise. It's just the jokes working over at the preowned dept that tick me off. The same financial guy tried to rip off my friend that bought an IS a couple months ago too.

Urban dictionary

"Car salesman" - One of the shiftiest occupations someone can take. Car salesman earn commision from whatever they sell and will lure, lie, mislead, con, deceive people into buying a car. This is especially true when it comes to used cars.
A car salesman ranks 9.5/10 on the shifty scale along with the real estate agents, politicians and professional con men.

The above is especially true for the sales management office and finance guys behind the closed doors. I always just get them out on the sales floor instead of letting them hide and dictate. That or I just work the deal from my home office with feet propped up and other options a phone call away.

Like I said earlier, try those three options and thanks Sevn.

Sorry for waking an old thread, but does this Techstream work on the 4GS? Just bought a 2013 GS350 with one key. Trying to find out the best solution for making a 2nd key without forking over $200 to the dealer.
