Is he saying that the engines don't last as long in those vehicles as they do in a Lexus application?
Actually the rep did not say that. What he said is lower octane in the RX and ES means lower hp and exhaust durability. Is he full of it, well as I said make your choice and live with it. After all he works for Lexus not an oil company.

Here is a link to what someone at Edmunds recommends as a general approach:

What hes saying doesn't make sense. Its the same engine, same emissions and exhaust in the Camry as it is in the ES. So why would using regular in the ES lower exhaust durability but that doesn't happen in the Camry?!? Its essentially the same car.

Remember, the ES DOES NOT require or recommend Premium as of 2011. The ES is designed to run on regular fuel. We are not talking about running a car that requires premium on regular fuel. The ES requires regular fuel as per Lexus.

If the car is yours, just use the manufacturer rated fuel, they recommend it for a reason. The computer will compensate for lower octane gas but if you plan on keeping the car don't use it too often if at all.
I thought the RX was premium unleaded so 90-93 octane! This was a 2011 RX.

Edit: just read the comments above, they must have changed it, didnt know they changed the gas will check the next time.

Little OT here :P When I drove my Nissan Maxima, it required premium. If I put anything else other than premium it would ping under heavy acceleration or up a steep hill... It is known that pinging is detrimental to the engine...

Now with the IS and ES I have not tried regular to see if they would do the same, i.e. ping...

Default gas question? super or regular on the GS?

i've always used premium gas on every car i've owned and when i bought the GS F-sport the dealer told me no need to use premium and said its ok to use regular grade. He mentioned these new lexus engines are ok with this... What grade of gasoline is everyone using?

I wouldn't consider using regular on the GS with direct injection. Premium here.

the computer will retard the timing when you use regular, so yes it works but you give up gas mileage and power

just stick to premium

Premium. Even says to use that on a label inside the fuel filler door on mine. The dealer is kind of right in that the engine is "ok" with regular, in the sense that you won't damage anything by using it. Unlike the bad old days when detonation from too low octane could destroy the engine. But premium is what this engine is designed for, and it won't perform the way it should if you give it lower octane fuel.

I just tried a tank of regular in my GS. I got 26.1 MPG, the same as with premium gas. I could not detect any difference in power, but I drive very conservatively.

This question always seems to come up. There is a whole thread on this, here you go johnnyk hope this helps. Personally I use what the car tells me so premium.

I would use premium it burns cleaner which in time is better for your engine and probably all the emissions sensors

Shame, shame! You're not supposed to produce empirical evidence. You're supposed to regurgitate conventional wisdom from two decades ago. Prepare for your spanking...

I use mid-grade on my GS. Never premium and never 87
