So the thoughts on the 8 speed tranny are that it gives a horsepower increase? That's interesting as I'd like to know how one equates that part to performance other than fuel economy.
I know from the RX 350 F Sport we have with the 8 speed, it is a nice drive. Fuel economy, still breaking the engine in at only 300 miles on the car so far.

Another round of media embargos ended recently. A few outlets have released more information on the 2014 IS:

There are several elements like the headlights and the tranny that stand out about the new IS. The rocker panel seems a bit over the top and I like the size of the GS more. But it gives a good indication about the direction of Lexus and the fact they didn't flag the tranny in a negative light also bears hope.

An 8 speed Trans and horsepower bump is appropriate. For the price being paid for the GS it should also have trunk struts instead of downgrading and removing it as standard equipment. We are not buying a Honda Accord here.

They'll probably be a high perf edition (GSF) for those craving more power beyond the enhanced perf from the 8 spd. These days auto mnfrs are not bumping power so much anymore due to CAFE's current and upcoming criteria. By incorporating the 8 speed they eek out 1-2 mpgs more and better perf times with out negatively affecting CAFE, if they bumped poewer too it would be a wash and that's not what they want. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the standard GS at 320hp + the 8 speed.

I think the engine tech and the established track record of the v6 are fine. There are always little tweaks that can be made to boost power and efficiency at the same time. Just a matter of the manufacturer being willing to put the money in. From my experience, you can power shift the 8 speed nicely. It just takes some learning on the new shift points. I also haven't seen the 8 speed go hunting for gears generally speaking. So if Lexus were to implement the 8 like the IS and RX f sports have, it would make sense and add more value to the step up.

Ive heard no GSF in '14. Perhaps in '15. The trunk is another small gripe I have with the car and adaptive headlamps that turn with the road. Small things that I feel should be brought back.

More gears certainly will not add HP... that's a fact. But closer gear ratios on the lower gears would give better torque, having the extra gears up high would provide better fuel economy at cruising speeds and also higher maximum speed (if it wasn't limited.) so it really depends on how they set the gear ratios.
someone correctly my if i'm wrong.
