I've heard mixed reports on the advantages and/or disadvantages of drilled and/or slotted rotors. Can anyone share their insight? TIA

I personally don't understand the philosophy behind drilled rotors; slightly less mass, perhaps better cooling of the disk, the ability for gas to expand under hard braking but prone to cracking and warping if the material isn't top notch and properly stress relieved.

Slotted on the other hand will help prevent your pads from glazing under hard use as it also provides an escape route for gases produced under braking like drilled rotors, but also the biting edge will scrape away pad material with every rotation keeping the surface fresh.

But regardless, slotted and drilled rotors look tough, drilled only look technically advanced and slotted only just look meh... Add is the case with most things, functionality and style aren't the same

I agree -- the drilled aspect is looks only.

Some manufacturers claim they disperse gas better but I do a lot of HPDE track driving (Spec Miata) and no one with any experience uses drilled.

Those that do use drilled rotors quickly learn that the holes get filled up with pad material and they crack and become prematurely useless.

Track or lots of aggressive braking need either blanks (no slots/holes) or slots only.

Drilled are bad, slotted are ok for trackdays. I'd stick with OEM and upgrade pads. What's your intent? Looks, stopping power, less dust?

I wouldn't make a blanket statement that drilled rotors are "bad". There is a reason why a lot of high-end brake manufactures use drilled rotors on their BBKs. (Ex. Brembo, Wilwood, StopTech, etc.) They are lighter and cool faster.

There may be a higher risk of warping over solid rotors, but I think that would only be an issue for cheap drilled rotors under extreme conditions. Not the normal operating temps our daily drivers would typically face.
