Default Lexus HUD Compared to BMW HUD - Photos

I took my son's new GS for a drive today and compared the HUD unit to the one on my BMW. This is one of those options you can do without... until you have it. Then you're hooked.

The Lexus HUD offers some info that the BMW doesn't like RPMs, a ECO bar graph, what gear you're in when in manual mode. I also noted that the MPH digits are larger than the BMW ones.

The BMW does offer color where as Lexus is white. Also, when using navigation the BMWs directions are larger and the color helps pick them out easier and it shows the street names. BMW also shows the active cruise control info.

Both HUDs are good and for me must have options, but IMHO I will give BMWs HUD a higher score.

Next comparison will be the radar cruise control.

I have noticed there are occasional times when the HUD washes out with my polarized sunglasses and becomes barely visible, but that is fairly rare. I would say BMW probably did do the better job with visibility.

Same with BMW. Polarized sunglasses washes out both cars HUDs.

Nice comparo!! Is it just me or the BMW HUD has a much larger opening in the dash...I saw it on a F30 and it seemed like a much larger area than the GS for example.

As you stated once you experience it, its one of those must haves.

I would say the BMW opening is twice the size of the Lexus one.

I think both BMW and Audi did a better job in the HUD dept then Lexus. I used all three and the Lexus seems the one that suffers from washed out digits the most. Glad I have it though, it still is a great option.

This is one option I wish I would have got. I had it in my bimmer and like the op mentioned once you have it, it is hard to go without.

has your son actually driven the car yet you seem to be having a lot of fun in the GS. i know... there's a new toy and you're just having fun. i know how you feel. yes the BMW HUD seems more advanced, and i also agree it's a must have. i don't even look at my display anymore unless i'm looking at the gas gauge... it would have been cool if they (lexus) could have added the gas gauge to the HUD.

Yeah I really wanted to get this but the wait is amazing to get one, I guess I'll get that if the gs-f comes out, for now I'll stay with what I got.

The BMW HUD blows away the Lexus HUD but I'd still love to have it.
BMW NAV is much better too.

I perfer the BMW HUD as well. It has a nicer, more intuitive layout, and it gives you more pertinent information while you're driving. I think having the Cruise ON indicator on the HUD is huge. I do like the GS' white lighting, but it would be nice to see at least red to match when going into SPORT S or SPORT S+.

I like the 3D screen and on the fly input capability.
As far as NAV goes,a Garmin unit is better.

What I think the BMW nav is terrible I do like the clouds in the day and stars in the night and building views but I can never tell where the exactly I'm going. Lexus Nav I think beats the BMW hands down, to bad Lexus didn't bring there birds eye over to the US.
