galaxy III and e mail

hi i just got the galaxy III i can get the text messages but not my e mail, is it normal or i need to change soe thing, my back berry was getting all my messages . is there a solution or i am stuck with it

I have the HTC LTE and it also reads text, but no emails. I think that is the way it was designed, but the manual is not clear on it.
