Default Lexus' New Joystick Control a "Disaster"

Interesting review by Cnet (who clearly like the car, based on the review), but listen around the 2:05 mark, where the reviewer refers to the new joystick control as a "Disaster"

I know this is a review on the GS, but I'm an LS owner, and I assume that the new LS is going to have this same exact control, right? Let's hope that Lexus improves it, because based on the demo, it's not something I would ever deal with!

I don't like the joystick control on the new RX.

I purposely never considered a BMW 7 series due to the **** controller.

What 'luxury' makers seem unable to comprehend (and I include Apple in this as well) is that luxury and convenience means getting what you want with as little effort as possible. Having to scroll through a series of menus and sub-menus to find a simple command? Hardly convenient. I have a friend with an IPhone and he has to touch the screen 3 times to find a phone number. Hardly convenient.

You'd think they would have dedicated buttons for all the usual 'frequently used' commands, then use the touch-feely scrolly stuff for things you seldom use.

Even my LS is less convenient than my old Accord.....I have to push Climate before I can adjust the fan speed. The Accord had a button ready and waiting.

I agree with this.....I think my older Accord actually handled the road better too. The LS ride can be cushy, but I think it's because the road bumps are absorbed by the body floating (ala Crown Vic) whereas the Accord suspension absorbed it smoothly and the cabin never seemed to be affected......

Loving the LS, but it's definitely a different beast.......

I like how brutally honest he is. Yeah why get an Fsport option?

i like it on the RX, with the side click button to select. the new GS which is a push-down-on-the-controller to select type is too difficult to use when the car is moving -- i always end up moving the cursor instead of selecting the option i want. freaking lexus

When I drive the loaner RXs they are pretty cool. The joy stick is not bad. Its just different. In the end it will just taking some getting used to. I still prefer the old school buttons . This is one of the reasons the LS is a bit more user friendly

The Joystick on the new RX is pretty cool, but there are some ways it could have been a little better. The Nav System needs a few more shortcuts to get to audio and the Joystick could have been used to provide them.

I tried the joystick in the new GS. It was OK, but probably need some getting used to. I understand it is their version 2 after making changes from the version in the RX. I still like using the touch screen more, but maybe I would change my mind after using the joystick for awhile.

I wasn't under the impression that the next LS will have joystick control. I would think that would happen only if the display changes to be the same as the screen in the 4th gen GS.

Using a joy stick while driving a car is a distraction and stupid!

The link didn't work for me either.

The industry must get its ideas sorted out.
Imagine an iPhone or an iPad without a touch screen, and both using a Blackberry track ball?
Everyone would complain? Right?
Then why not continue with a direct touch screen in the 4GS?
And, if people want a "high up" display of the directions - this is already displayed on the head up display HUD!!!
