I owned a GS about 4 years ago and I remember that the hybrid battery had lost a cell causing to show a code and I remember the dealer replacing the battery free of cost even after the warranty. Has anyone had their hybrid battery go out on them recently and what was the dealer's response? This is the only thing holding me back from getting another one as I love these cars.

The hybrid system has a 8yr 100,000 mile warranty on them so if it still under that period the dealer will have to replace for free

You have several options. Everything depends on how handy you are.

Option one: Buy online a full battery replacement with 1 year warranty second hand ... it costs usually around 2000 dollar, you can then disassemble your current pack an keep the good modules for a next failure. Keep them dry and in a dark place, also recuperate the other components like fans, contacts, regulator, etc.

Option two: Buy just the modules online, open up the battery (there is a manual on this site somewhere) and replace the defective cell(s). I found some modules for around 38 dollar.

In the UK (I'm living in Belgium) I found a company rebuilding your batteries with warranty for around 800 euro however if it fails I probably just buy a replacement for 2K and disassemble mine for spares.

At a dealership a new one costs around 3700 euro + work

In Belgium if you do a yearly hybride check-up warranty is extended upt to 11.5 years. (140 months)

here couple thing I did for educational purposes only.
couple weeks ago got check engine light P0A80 famous code and car went into limp mode.
i was able to drive on gasoline engine only /hybrid part was disabled.
went to dealer to read code and freeze frame .voltage readout was on 20 blocks about same 14.4 - 14.9 volts.( just reminder lexus got 40 battery cells in side hybrid battery)
one block was reading voltage 13.1 volts.
vehicle speed was at 85 km.
code p0a80 REPLACE HYBRID BATTERY PACK will be very costly .dealer not selling cell individual.

I went on net and found couple used ones for about 25$ each.just in case.

After a lot of research we took HYBRID BATTERY out.
be carefull it is hi voltage battery and it can hurt you badly. After dissmounting cover we expose cell blocks about 7.5-7.9 volts each.
PROBLEM WAS IN CONECTION ...SMALL ELIPTICAL SHAPE TWO HOLES COOPER CONECTORS ON SOME BLOCKS WERE OXIDISED CORRODED.
I did clean all of 40 bus connectors using vinigar and baking soda and send paper grit 1000 ,and after drying put dielectric grease on.

put back everything couple hours job. depends how many plates you have to clean.
and that was it ,
fuel economy was better for and acceleration was great.

SO step one clean connectors and u can prolong life of your HYBRID BATTERY ,

soon i will post some of the pics.

REMINDER ALL CELLS ARE THE SAME AND COULD BE EXCHANGED BETWEEN LEXUS ,PRIUS 2ND GENERATION ,AND TOYORA CAMRY. 2007-2011

Here is some pics of hybrid battery pack.

Remove all interior carpet from trunk to get easy access.
12 volt batety panasonic oemDisconnect 12 volt battery and remove it to get easy access to duct work.
Hybrid fan
Remove fan and all duct work .remove back seat to gain access to hidden 3 bolt holding hybrid battery.



This is behined seat one on each side plus one in center where is armrest.
Front of the hybrid battery.When u locate all holding nuts than next step is to remove orange safety hybrid battery swithc.
Make sure battety is disconnected .check voltage just in case and use protectiv electrical gloves just in case of any voltage is around.BE VERY CAREFULL HERE THERE IS NO ROOM FOR MISTAKE.
Hi voltage can injure you.CAUTION
After safety orange plug has been removed u have to remove 2 more red cables an one more ground cable




Remove all duct work and ubolt battery .BE CAREFULL THIS IS TWO MAN JOB BATTERY IS VERY HEAVY OVER 50 KG.
Empty trunk after battery has been removed

put battery on desk and slowley remove cover .PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS AND REMEMBER BATTERY IS STILL ENERGIZED SO BE VERY CAREFULL.




This is the battery with 40 cells and connectors on both sides.
Removal of oxidized corroded plates was easy and clean up was next .







after cleaning was done we put them back using elect.grease.
An d use reversal procedure.
NO MORE CODE A0A80

Also one more thing we have checked voltage on each individual cell just to eliminate that option .
Well just in case if it any cell faulted replace with another one



good cell should b abot 7.5volts. Max looks like is abot 8.5 fully charged.
Remember u are dealing here with hi voltage PLEASE BE CAREFULL.
DONT HURT YOURSELF.

Looks like every cell is same for camry hybrid , lexus hybrid and prius ( 2nd gen.prius) so u can swap cells between cars.
Dealer not slling cells u have to buy used ones.

Here is how battery works after all tests in town and au

tobahn.
Battery acceping full charge and have a lot of power
Fuel economy is great after this was done.
Well i am recomanding this to be done on any hybric car after 2-3 years just like part of regular maintance.

Good Job....Thanks for sharing...BTW how long was the process? from take it off the battery to put it back?
how heavy approximately the battery?

well all process was about 4 hours.we did take it slow at begining but reversal was super fast .i think all this should b done in 3 hours top.

removalll is two man job definetly . the battery u have to lift up over bolts than pull out that is heavy part .
installation was a bit tricky because u have to align 3 holes at the back and bolts on front each side .
o one more thing after reinstalling 2 red cables metal shield goes over as protection.but there is one metal part looks like wire holder that must b going first under metal shield.

after rebuilding hybrid battery.we decided to change dual muffler with one from is 250.sing c clamp and staching pipe from is 250 side is all u need. mounting brackets are aligned and one close to cat needs to b bended a tiny bit.
hrome tail pipe we pulled out about 1\4 inch just to be more flash with bumper,
is 250 muffler is shorter than gs450 after installation was done next was drive test.
wow .....car was super fast and fuel economy didint change unless u r floring it.nice back pressure.
when u put in sport mode sounds like AMG benz c55 almost.
wery happy with this mode.

Thank you for posting this info. I'm surprised the GS450H cells are similar to Camry / Prius cells - the battery replacement packs are so expensive for the GS450H. This is good to know though as typically it is only a few cells that are bad so at least I can go that route if I get the bad battery code in the future.
