Horrible Fuel Economy - '07 GS 350 AWD - 13L/100KM (18MPG)

Got myself an '07 AWD about 2 months ago. Came from an '02 LS430.
I live in downtown Toronto and I've been getting ~13l/100 (18mpg) if it's 80% city driving in the downtown core with a gentle foot. When I'm aggressive I'll get as low as 16l/100 (14.5mpg)
Just did a 1600km (1000 miles) road trip over the last week (Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and back).
Topped out at 8.3l/100 (28mpg) on the flat out drive back from Quebec City to Toronto (~800km/500miles).
I always drove with cruise running at ~118kph (70mph) because cops here don't seem to ticket below 120kph.
I always run 89 octane.
My '02 LS430 got... The exact same mileage.
I honestly believe that gas mileage is simply and only a matter of weight and power.
The math that the EPA uses that involves displacement is garbage.
It simply takes so much fuel to provide so much power to do so much work.
A 2l turbo that puts out near 300hp/lb-ft pulling about the same weight seems to get the same real world mileage. See the GS200t.
Age and tech doesn't seem to matter is the LS V8 (a design from ~1999) matches the direct injected modern engines.
Meh. Buy what you enjoy then enjoy it well.

I'm getting around 14.3l/100 90% city with normal driving in my 06 430. I get about 9.5l/100 at a hilly 120-130km/h which is not so bad for a non-direct injected 4.3l engine. Im pretty sure the 4.6 does better with that beautiful 8 speed box.

Hi all:
Hoping for some input.
Purchased an '07 GS 350 AWD in June. For first few months the fuel economy was wonderful (about 10-10.5L/100KM or 23MPG). Suddenly, it seemed like overnight it went down to about 13L/100KM or 18MPG.
I noticed this big change when I received a 'Low Oil' warning on my dashboard about 5000KM into my first oil change (which was right after I purchased the car). I changed from conventional to synthetic and have since then read about the unfortunate burning oil issue.
Anyways, spark plugs were replaced by previous owner in December 2014. I've tried the STP fuel cleaner. New engine air filter. Tires are new and properly inflated. None of this made a difference.
Has anyone else had this drastic drop in fuel economy and been able to pinpoint the culprit? My driving habits haven't changed so I'm just looking for some advice on how to get those numbers back.
Side note, is there a way to reset the fuel economy to start from scratch? My next step will probably be to do manual measures to make sure the numbers are accurate.
