2014 Gen 05 Nav Update Toyota/Lexus Interchangeable
So I've been researching this for a while now and read quite a few horror stories. Always check the site you are buying your update from to make sure they're legit. Nav DVD maps (.com) for instance is a scam site offering almost any nav cd for, at the most, $49.99 (so STAY AWAY!). This isn't to say there are deals out there but why gamble on something you only probably update every four years if that?
I live in a city with no Lexus dealerships. We do have a Toyota dealership though. A lot (if not all) Toyota dealerships (and vice versa) will tell you that the Nav dvds are NOT interchangeable. They don't want you buying the wrong dvd and have an upset customer when it doesn't work.
I set out to get to the bottom of this. To sum everything up short and sweet:
1) Found a forum post here: Toyota Forum
This guy wants to update his nav dvd to the 2014 update but Lexus has theirs on sale for $99 instead of having to pay the $169.
2) According to Lexus' Navigation Website we need the Lexus update DVD PT219-GEN05-14 for the GS '07-'09's.
3) The Toyota Forum guy post that he however needs the Nav DVD 86271-GEN05-14 (so close!).
4) I notice on the Lexus Official site, they have an ID# under the version we need for our Lexus'.
5) It is (for this particular update): Identification Number #86271-53029. If you refer back to the Toyota forum post, he initially states the ID# of the disc he needs. What do you know!? It's the exact same as the ID# the Lexus needs.
With my evidence and case compiled, I approach the service desk at the Toyota dealership and ask for this Toyota Nav DVD by the ID#. The service guy asks what kind of vehicle I have. I tell him a 2007 Lexus GS 350. He responds defiantly that the disc I requested would not work for my car. Instead of arguing (where most of these stories end up going south), I simply pick a model that the Toyota nav is intended for and explain it's for that (ex. 2007 Tundra). He says ok, gets the disc, sale complete.
Yes I paid full price for this $169, but I wasn't trying to get a discount, I was trying to prove that they are the exact same Nav DVDs. I also was headed out of town today and needed the updated nav for my trip considering it still had the stock '07 DVD in it.
Specs for this experiment:
The Toyota/Lexus 2014 Nav DVD update 86271-Gen05-14 or PT219-GEN05-14 (86271-53029) covers:
Lexus ES350 2007-2009
Lexus GS350 2007-2009
Lexus GS450h 2007-2009
Lexus GX470 2007-2009
Lexus GS430 2007-2009
Lexus GS460 2007-2009
Lexus IS250 2006-2009
Lexus IS350 2006-2009
Lexus ISF 2008-2009
Lexus RX340 2007-2009
Lexus RX350 2007-2009
Lexus RX400h 2007-2009
Toyota Years Models Radio Faceplate Model Number
2007 - 2009 Camry E7012
2007 - 2009 Camry Hybrid E7011
2007 - 2009 Solara E7009
2007 - 2009 Tundra E7013
2006 - 2009 4Runner E7008
2008 - 2010 Highlander E7014 or E7016
2008 - 2010 Highlander Hybrid E7015 or E7017
2008 - 2009 Land Cruiser N/A
2008 - 2009 Sequoia E7013
2006 - 2010 Sienna E7007
2008 - 2009 Scion XB, XD, TC
TL;DR If there is no Lexus/Toyota dealership in your town then you can use a Nav DVD update from the Toyota/Lexus dealership or vice versa for your scenario (that may not make sense but basically they are interchangeable).
If anyone has ANY questions about this, I can probably answer it since I've spent a while now sorting all this out. Sorry if this is a repost. I'm new here and didn't see any posts really covering this in detail so I thought I'd do a 'write-up' style thread to cover it.
Even made a little video for proof (sorry for holding my phone that way!):
