Ive done a few on GS350/IS350s. They are a pain in the ***. Prepare to have your hands cut up if you do it yourself lol. 4 hours is overkill. I don't recall what I charged for the last one, but it was in the 2-3 hour range. It comes out the top. The compressor is not removed. I move the radiator support and slide the radiator forward just a bit to get some extra room.

My guess is it's the AWD versions that the compressor MUST be removed as I'm finding this out the hard way...

Ok.. If I could chime in here.
An alternator test (to determain if the alternatoor is defective) is a very simple test with a simple voltmeter done in he driveway:
This test is more effective with a known good battery. If your in doubt the battery is healthy, replace it prior to this test. I would always start with good known battery.
Start the car (no load), connect the voltmeter to the battery.. What is the voltage? Does it flucuate?
Begin load on the battery, headlights, brake lights, flashers, Nav or CD. Whats the voltage now? Has the voltage dropped below 12v and not recovering? Are the headlights dimming with the extra load as well? If yes to all of these and your certain the battery is health, then you have an alternator to replace.
