Help - do I need new tranny that will cost 6k?
Hi everyone,
Quick summary: engine light, ! light, traction light and VSC lights are on. Dealer told me they see codes P0751, P2714, and P2757. From the codes I was told they want to follow bulletin lsb0076-09 which is telling them to reprogram the computer, this would also require them to change the two rear to oxygen sensors as the sensors would not talk back to the reprogrammed computer; all of this would cost about $1100 with the discounts they are giving me, supposedly. Even if this is done, they told me the transmission could possibly need to be changed. I have read the entire VSC post and I am totally confused as what to do, would appreciate any help.
Long version:
I have a 2006 GS300. I took the car to Lexus in July when I had extended warranty because the car felt off, engine rpm would dip at low rpm and transmission felt rough. After a week they found nothing.
Now my warranty is expired and the problems are worse. The car has the engine light, ! light, traction light and VSC light on. I took it to a different Lexus dealer and they said it is the transmission that needs to be changed, problem with transmission solenoid. Since that's 6k I took it to 2 independent shops, one changed the tranny fluid and was a better for a while other couldn't diagnose.
I took it back to the original dealer which is now saying they could try reprogramming the computer logic but would have to change the two rear oxygen sensors as the sensors would not talk to the reprogrammed computer, which would cost over 1k. Even if that's done, he said it could still be the transmission! The car is showing codes for both of these.
The car shifts ok to me in manual, in auto it feels really off, it will stutter forward at low speed and the breaks feel off. One of the mechanics told me the car is getting stuck in the higher gears, gear 3 I believe.
Other people have posted with similar symptoms online and I've seen solutions like changing spark plugs, changing the gas cap, changing the wiring harness or problems with the fuel.
I'm wondering what I should do, dropping 1k and then having to drop another 6k for a transmission seems crazy. Car only has 78k miles. Engine was rebuilt last year for engine misfires via a Lexus recall (they don't call it a recall but basically was).
Should I go ahead with the reprogram? I would appreciate any advice, very lost at the moment.

bring it back to the first dealer with the diagnosis of the second dealer. you may have a claim since you brought it in before the warranty expired…hopefully they see it that way…if they don't get 3 estimates….

Lexus dealerships are usually good about "just out of warranty" issues, especially if the problem was originally brought to their attention before the warranty expired. I concur with warandcar on this matter.

(Side note, these Lexus dealers have been terrible. The first time I took my car in the the service rep was trying to get me to get a steering fluid flush even though the car has electric steering. I even asked him about it and he said it needs it. I called corporate about this and they were very rude to me and did not apologize or anything. Next time I was at the dealer I told the manager and he apologized and said that he was fired, but when I was there this week I saw him there. I wasn't trying to get the fired but all these guys seem like crooks, very sad.)
All these issues with the car, I think, stem from the engine misfire recall, I believe the engine is taken out and separated from the transmission when the fix is performed. I think something went wrong during the fix. I just don't see this car with 78k miles which has been serviced well and not driven hard could have this issue.
I am not sure how other luxury brands are but my experience with this car has been terrible for the most part. I would not consider another Lexus in the future.

The warranty company is Mercury insurance and they denied it all three times that i've tried. They say the dealer didn't tell us it had an issue then, and now it's expired. I can't force the dealership to make the right diagnosis but it was the dealer that messed up even though I told them I felt the engine and transmission did not seem to be right. It is no coincidence that now the car is underivable and to this day they can't 100% confirm the issue but they would change the transmission if I paid up 6k now.

If you believe that the issue with the transmission was caused when the recall was done then take it back to the dealer who did the recall work since it was only a year ago. On a side note...that's why I don't deal with 3rd party extended warranties and most will just replace with salvage yard parts. They are waiting for 11:59 pm on the day it expires to tell you sorry. Babying a car and short trips can be just as hard on a car but I would bet on possible solenoid problems with your transmission. I would have a reputable shop drop the pan and clean/change the transmission screen and clean the solenoids before I condemn the transmission completely. My dealership really stands behind their work and diagnostics....even though they get on my nerves. Best of luck but keep us posted.
I talked to Lexus corporate and they offered 15% off labor, which I can get which a coupon off the dealer website , they would not help out in anyway. She said since they didn't find anything two months a go, and the car is 6 years old and its "mechanical" and things break they don't have to do anything. Way to stand by your product. The 2006 model year is a lemon.

Thanks for the advice. I will talk to the service rep tomorrow about the recall work to see if that goes anywhere. For now I think I will do the reprogram for 1k and hope that it fixes the problem, but it seems unlikely.

Looks like the transmission gets stuck in 3rd on mine, so it's pretty much all the time the car is struggling. Sorry to hear you are having problems too, really sucks. Dealer is reprogramming the computer and changing the oxygen sensors tomorrow I'll update when I hear back.
