I'm not really disputing plug changing interval, but I meant for him to do it himself at some point before 120k rather than pay $434 at anytime. Plugs are 75 bucks for all 6 + 2 hours of time if you know nothing. In that context, I rather just take them out before they get too worn in and become more complicated to get out if he attempted it; and I have heard of that happening. If that is bogus then sure I agree with you; but I rather see him save the cash for something he may need later that's out of his mechanical depth or too messy/time consuming for him to be bothered with either way.

I had my spark plugs done at a discount since they already had the car apart for a recall... they also noticed the water pump was leaking and replaced it under CPO so it worked out.

Do I need any sort of torque wrench to get the plugs right, or can I just guess how tight they need to be? I think I have a plug socket somewhere around here, and a nice long extension for my ratchet.

I've never used a torque wrench on spark plugs. They need to be tight, but not superman tight. Aluminum heads can strip fairly easily so you want to avoid over tightening. I'd say finger tight plus maybe 1/8-1/4 turn with the socket wrench.
