I installed the Vaistech SLI in 2007, and iPod AIFF sounds superb through the ML (modified subwoofer) system. No loss of bass. Even though it uses an iPod connector, it's still analog audio passing through in my case. If your ears are indeed picky, best advice would be to stop using MP3 -- unless by "craptastic" you meant good. Use high bitrate AAC or WAV, PCM, AIFF.

Do you find that you need to significantly change the volume control when you switch over to the Viastech input? That can be addressed, at least.
