Default "clunk" noise when changing gear

08, 75k, gs 350: Car in garage every night; when I start in the morning and shift into R I notice a "clunk" in the rear of the car. Next, when I shift into D same noise. Sound is not as loud when I put more pressure on brake pedal, but is present. After driving the car several miles (greater than 10), the sound is still present, but significantly less. This has been occuring for some time. Last maint. at lexus indicated rear pads with 6mm remaining. I was thinking this might be the shifting of the pads, or is this the caliper. Also: full alignment done 6+ months ago and only left front toe was out of spec.. Please advise

I'd start looking into sway bar bushings, differential mount bushings and any other piece of rubber back there. It could, sadly, be excessive wear in your diff which is causing backlash (I doubt it, though).

My rear driveshaft was on it's way out.... it did EXACTLY what you said.... with the CHUNK noise between gears and what not. ONLY when the rear differential went into shock though (between gear changes and whatnot). Let us know what Lexus determines after you take it in

Dropping car off at lexus dealer; I am praising that I bought the extended warranty. Received phone call from my friends brother who is a toyota tech in another state and he also stated rear differential, but mostly confirmed NOT NORMAL.

Any update 7 years later? My 2008 GS 350 RWD just started having the same problem.

Default Haha same here 11GS350

This is not my first Lexus six speed are used to have a 4GS it did this but not as dramatically as my 2011 yes would also have the same similar clunk but not as bad. My 2011 GS with 100 K does this clunk I don’t know I really think it’s the strong idol in the morning that really is pushing the car get it checked out but I don’t think there’s anything really to be worried about, I’ve done mine differential fluid since seven in the car and I could tell that it was definitely not the first time I had been done. My best advice just keep the brake pressed in a little more for less dramatic feel but ya I understand.

Wow! I just posted about this. It's your brake pad hardware. Get an OEM kit
Note the sound doesn't appear when driving over bumps or rough roads, hence it's not suspension related.
