DIY: Fuel Pressure (Low pressure side) Test
Hey guys, I have been ruling out some problems on my 450h and a fuel pressure test was in need. Here's some quick instructions and a parts list so that you can tap into the quick connectors.
Materials:
- a few feet of 5/16" I.D. rubber fuel line
- 6 hose clamps of the appropriate size for the rubber fuel line
- a 5/16" - 5/16" quick connect nipple (photo below) O.D.
- a 5/16" Tee
- an analog pressure gauge (that way you can see fluctuations)
**Make sure the gauge doesn't read above 150psi. This fuel system runs from about 25-85psi and you'll want lots of gauge space to see exactly what's going on in there.
1) Build your manifold (photo below)
2) Make sure the car has been sitting over night, this way, the fuel pressure will have dropped down
OTHERWISE: remove the back seat, disconnect the fuel tank electrical connectors, put the car in inspection mode and run it until it dies.WARNING: don't spill fuel on the hot exhaust which is right below. Have a fire extinguisher handy.
3) Remove the safety exterior clip that holds the connector together
4) Push the line IN, push the gray tabs, then twist and pull apart
5) Install your manifold, make sure everything's tight. Your 5/16"-5/16" nipple should fit perfectly in the car's female receptacle.
6) Start the car and verify that the pressure is ok.
7) Shut off the car, and verify that the pressure remains above 21PSI for 5 minutes.
Put it all back together and go hoon!

Two ways: one is with the intelligent scanner.
2) Put car in "ON" (not start). Floor the gas pedal twice in P, twice in N and twice back in P (you can be slow about it). The little screen should say "maintenance mode", now start the car.
This feature is on many Toyota, Lexus cars, but it's more important for Hybrids, because this mode keeps the engine running continuously.
