Should I write up a DIY for changing tranny fluid?

Big Richard, Where do you plan to get the IR Temp gun? Final check requires you to open the fill hole once the temp hits 104-113 and let drip to a trickle.

Well Thanksgiving is upon us and as we deep fry our turkeys, Big Richard is prepping for the tranny flush. We all wish you well and look forward to the procedure being shared with us. Happy Thanksgiving to all

I've brought my car to the dealer twice for a transmission flush. The first was performed at 60k and th last was done at 120k. I have 160k on the car and plan on getting it done in a couple of months at 180k. I do all the work on my own car since day one but I know my limitations without the right tool. I would love to see a DIY on this as well but this is a no joke procedure to get it right. Time, certain temperatures and a machine to get 10 plus quarts FLUSHED out of the transmission is the only way to perform this job properly. The dealer gave me a loaner each time because the car needs to sit and the fluid needs to be checked at certain times and tempetures to make sure it's not over or under filled. The only way to do all these checks is with the machine. Hence why they call it a sealed (no dipstick) unit. I choose my battles wisely and this one, I will always leave to the professionals with the proper tools involved. I am very curious as to how you will go about this without a machine and I would love to know how you are going to get all of that fluid out.
I do a "Drain and fill" on my wife's RX every year. I only get 3 quarts out knowing that I have another three in there. That's why I end up doing it every 10-15k. Good Luck my friend!

Not trying to scare anyone away from doing their own work. This is a pretty involved procedure with the correct machine attaced. Where is the OP?

To all:

I apologize for not dong it yet. I was ready the Saturday night after Thanksgiving but I did not purchase enough tranny fluid. The BG PF5 machine requires 16 quarts of fluid (eek!) for a proper flush and I only bought 10. Hopefully I can get to it over the holidays.

It's not a DIY process then if you are using a BG PF5 machine.

It's a pseudo-DIY

Drain and fill is DIY - and that wont do much...

Agreed. It's more like a write up on how it's done with a machine rather than a DIY in a home garage with a set of tools. 16 quarts of fluid cost you how much? Time and doing the labor isn't saving much more than having your local dealer do it for little out of pocket. Other than saying you did it yourself, it isn't saving you a whole lot. Maybe I'm wrong?

my dealer says they don't do them as maintenance as the fluid is lifetime. I have argued until blue in the face.

Firstly, my dealer won't do it. They said if i absolutely demand it done it will be over $300. Local toyota dealer will do it for $220 and they only do drain and fill so what am i left with? I have friend with all the tools needed and hookup on fluid and a four post lift. I'll be out $100 bucks total (just fluid cost) and a few hours of a saturday afternoon. Correct, it is not a true diy but i plan to walk through all of the steps with pics for those that want to know what it takes. Just trying to add info to the forum community. I do my own oil changes and every other maintenance item needed on my car and i could easily afford to pay to have it done and sit in the lounge and eat cookies, but i choose to do things myself so they are done right. And i enjoy it.

I've had a Buick tranny fail after I changed the transmission fluid. My cousin had his Ford fail after changing the transmission fluid. If the manufacturer says don't change it, then don't change it.
