I turned off the reverse tilt function on mine since the gears in the housings are a known weak spot.

weak spot in design/engineering. A search should turn up more than a few people that have had issues with the tilt and return feature on the side mirrors. One picture I saw showed the interior gears were missing some of the gear teeth or section, causing the erratic behavior where it works sometimes and doesn't return properly other times.

To disable this feature, you press whichever side of the mirror adjustment is currently lit and it will extinguish the indicator light on the control. Once this is done, auto tilt down in R is disabled.

Yep this happended to me where the mirror would go down and either wouldnt come back up or would go a little higher so I brougt it to the dealer and they told me it was the actuator in the mirror that needed to be replaced. May want to see if its that.

Common problem for the GS350. My 07GS350 driver side mirror broke 3 yrs ago. Lexus replaced the whole mirror under basic warranty. My passenger side mirror broke 6 months ago. Lexus replaced the actuator under the EW. Cost Lexus around $370. Probably cost more if out of my pocket.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I dont have EW but I still have 30 days left from the used car dealer. I wonder if this would cover it?

Like everyone mentioned its the gears and actuator behind the mirror. I've gotten mine both replaced by Lexus under warranty, that alone paid off my warranty.
