I recently purchased a 2007 Lexus GS350, and the black plastic piece under the cupholder trim piece broke. One end of it where it snaps into the housing seems to have broken, and the trim piece came off that. Lexus dealer says the whole assembly comes together, and costs $1200, can't buy the parts separately.

This appears to be a common problem, but didn't see anywhere on how one can go about fixing it. Does that black plastic piece come out to make repairs? Are there any good aftermarket replacements?

Basically right now, I have a partially broken black plastic cover lid, and the wood trim piece that covers that black plastic lid is sitting in my center console.

donno how to fix it, but if you must have one, try the link below or look for used parts on ebay, etc... $1200 for cup holder? yikes..

well it comes with the whole shift plate wood piece, thus the high price

i honestly haven't heard this problem before, i don't know if it's really a common problem. but have you tried to pop the shift plate and see if it's something that you can fix by other means or maybe just get that part from junk yard
