no service record on carfax.. stay away?
I saw an 08GS with 37k miles, and the carfax shows no service history. Does this mean the car was neglected, or they just didnt go to a lexus dealer to do it? Is this common?

have you tried carproof?
you might even be able to call lexus corporate and just explain your situation, they probably won't tell you much but they might be able to let you know if there is service history for the car

I looked up on mylexus. Other than 5k service, there is nothing reported other than yearly state inspection for safety/emissions. I guess it could mean they just didnt take it to a lexus dealer... OR.. they abused it.

yeah sometimes people lease cars, put crazy miles on it, and then get someone to change the miles before they return it.. lexus has no idea because the person got the oil changed from those 10 min quick lube places

I'm thinking of having a mechanic take a quick look for any obvious issues. What's the best way to do this? Just go on a test drive and have it looked at without telling dealer? Or asking the dealer if its OK?

Why on earth do people think carfax is a reliable???? They have thousands of examples of carfax reports having completely false information! Have the vehicle inspected by a good Lexus dealer that has an in-house body shop many of them will do the inspection for free. If you rely on carfax you will get burned. My brother bought a 2007 Corvette with a perfect carfax report and found out later the car had major damage.

That would be my suggestion. The dealership you are purchasing from shouldn't have a problem with you talking the car for a checkup. If so, just walk away. You should be able to schedule a full inspection at the local Lexus dealership. It may cost you about a $100 bucks or so. I think that would be money well spent. Even if they find something and you decide to bag the deal, it is money well spent upfront as opposed to finding out after you have purchased the car that something is out of sorts. And if they don't find anything, then you have yourself a sweet, worry free car! Good luck!

some dealerships/auto shops, you have to make sure you ask that it reported or else it wouldnt show up on carfax. Nothing to really worry about though honestly. Like stated, take it to a Lexus dealer for inspection prior to purchase.
