Solution to clunking noise on front driver side
Hey guys-
Been a fan of the site, and recently bought an 06 GS300. She's a beauty, and w/ only 49000mi looks and drives like new . . . except a weird clunk that would occur occasionaly from the left front driver side when I'd go over sharp bumps, seams, etc at around 20-40mph. Now, I've seen the numerous posts about clunking and guys thinking it's the suspension. That might be the case for some, but for me it was something totally unrelated.
Next to the brake master cylinder, near the firewall, is a box, about 5" x 5", with 4 or 5 tubes running into it. This box (I assume it is some form of ABS/brake modulator) is mounted on rubber bushings, one on either side, with 10mm bolts. If I rapped on the box lightly with my knuckles straight up and down, I'd hear the same knock I'd hear when driving. Apparently, it was hitting the bracket in a couple of spots, causing the annoying, rather loud, knocking over bumps. So, I loosened the two 10mm bolts, pryed (gently) up on the box with a long handled screwdriver to move the box up the bracket slots so that it wouldn't contact any part of the bracket when moved around, and then tightened the bolts back down nice and tight.
Now, the knock is COMPLETELY gone! The car is dead silent inside over any bumps (I do get a few of the famous rattles now and then though!).
I thought that this could help some of you. When I would hear that noise, my first thought was suspension issue (worn bushings, bad strut, etc), because it sounds like that's where it was coming from. So, I was hoping this could save some of you some money, time, headaches, etc.
Take care guys.
