has anyone swapped their 06 07 steering wheel + airbag to the 08+ look

how easy is this ? is it a direct swap, any DIY instructions?

It's not difficult to swap a steering wheel but probably expensive. Have you looked at the two different wheels? I'm asking b/c I have a 2006 and a 2010 and like the 2006 steering wheel much better. To me the buttons have better ergonomics and I even like the styling better. Just my .02, but I like the older steering wheel.

The leather on the older steering wheels seems better to me. On the newer ones, it seems thinner and more pleathery.

My problem with the '06 steering wheels that I have seen is that the leather tends to get shiny as it wears.

As any real leather does.

A great way to remove the shine from the steering wheel is to use a Mr Clean Magic eraser. Then after you have cleaned it thoroughly, you follow up with leather cleaner and finish off with leather conditioner. I've done it to my 97' BMW 740IL and the wheel looks just like new.

Interesting mahmudb, I will have to remember that trick. How did you even think of that idea?

I learned it from a BMW board that I'm also a member of. It really does make the steering wheel look like brand new.

Here is a pic of an 04' Infiniti G35x with 79k miles on it. I had just finished cleaning it up.

Magic eraser is very abrasive, it works like a very fine sand paper, you are removing some of the top coat of the leather.

Be very cautious using this product, people have ruined their leather seats using it.

Yes that is true. I wouldn't recommend using this product on seats. It does work great on plastic panels to remove shoe scuffs.

If you do use this on the steering wheel. It is very important that you use some leather cleaner and conditioner.

Its an easy job but the parts are expensive, unless you get lucky like BinaryJay and find it somewhere.

I wouldn't call the magic eraser very abrasive, it's very slightly abrasive but I think you'd really have to go to town on something for it to remove any appreciable amount of material from what you're scrubbing.

Never thought of using it on leather before. My steering wheel has "shined up" a bit, I might try it in a small area just to see what happens.
