Do a lot of reading on Autogeek

There's a lot of products, but user experience is best. Get lots of feedback.

The #1 thing you need to get is Microfiber Towels. They clean best without scratching the car. Go to Costco and you can pick up a whole bunch of them for 15 bucks. Use them for interior, exterior, home, and lots of other things.

After washing and drying my car, I like to use "Klasse All-In-One" a cleaner polish+protectant. It uses acrylics and not silicons or waxes. I think it's a great product and you can layer on wax on top if you want a warm glow.

For the interior, use Vinylex for all plastic and rubber parts. It keeps them clean, prevents cracking, and is safe. I avoid Armor all - only bad experiences with that crap.

For your leather seats, clean then them with Lexol brand Leather cleaner. Follow up with Lexol brand leather conditioner, and your leather seats will stay fresh.

Agree that Z10 Leather in a Bottle is amazing. It doesn't seem to last for more than a couple of months, but it smells fantastic and really does a good job of keeping the leather supple.

Next time you're stripping your car down, you may want to do a test spot with the claybar to see if it has any affect. I've done it on all my new cars, but most of those traveled by rail at some point and picked up rail dust which can eventually show as rust specks on light colored cars.

Do you guys just use any micro fiber cloth? Or is there certain ones that are better and/or worse? I am thinking of just going to Costco and picking up a pack as suggested, but I just want to see what some of you guys use

micro fiber is a MUST, otherwise no good wax or polish can "keep" the car in good condition.

the ones from costco are ok, not among the best i have seen. we have quite a few detailing vendors here on CL, i forgot which one i ordered from, but i do have some that's far better quality (in general, the price can be an indication)

Whatever the car shampoo, use plenty of water to avoid scratches!
Yeah, microfibre is unbeatable when it comes to perfect finishing off drying the car.

always use the 2 buckets approach, and helps to have grits at the bottom of buckets too

I think that the micro fiber is a no brainer. I can not imagine waxing without it.

I think the biggest thing that many people miss is to always clean your glass with a 100% cotton cloth. It will never leave streaks like paper towels

I'm about to do clean the exterior next week and it's the first time. So do I clean car with soap and water, use clay bar and then wax? or is it the wrong steps?

if your idea is to strip off all the old wax and put on good new one, then use soap like dawn (no bleach version!) to wash the car, that will take out a lot of stuff. then use clay bar, and i would highly recommend followed by some polish. finish up with sealant / wax

I Just use the regular carwash stuff. It's not perfect but it doesn't harm the paint.

i know everyone is pimping the micro-fiber towels, but...

if you go to Zaino's website, they sell a pack of 3 100% cotton, borderless, tagless, seamless towels that are softer than my baby's a$$. they're a little pricey, but you get what you pay for, and I've never found an exception to that rule. IMO they're better than any micro-fiber towel you will find.

I use 3M polish, followed by Wolfgang Glaze, Wolfgang Sealant, and then Carnauba Wax. I do this once a quarter.

I reapply wax once a month. Bear in mind my car is garaged and driven only 3 days a week.

On a weekly basis, I wash and then finish with Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer and Meguiars Ultimate Quick Wax.

Don't forget to clay bar your car as well. Here's my once yearly detail list.

1. Spray down car and clean rims
2. Wash twice, second round I remove all bugs and tar
3. Clay bar entire car
4. Spray car down + wipe
5. Polish (if necessary)
6. Seal / Wax car

Products I use: Zaino, Griots, Meguiars...

As others have stated pick up some micro fiber towels, a good wash bucket and some fresh sponges. Always detail your car in the shade, and also ensure that your paint is relatively cool to the touch before applying clay bar or any form of wax or sealant.
