people have all posted, i don't even have to say more. i have taken off shift plate and other panels than most people here, i know what they are. of course they are not FULL piece of wood. it's a thin layer of wood overlay just like i stated

I'd like to replace my steering wheel with an all leather wheel. For all practical purposes you cannot buy a GS without the "wood" wheel.

wood overlay <> wood...in my mind. sorry that I believe Lexus uses cheap parts in their vehicles. all auto-makers do, that's why we have rattles, knocking, cheap mirror parts, cheap trunk closing parts..etc etc. I love my car, just hate when they advertise something that isn't entirely true.

When I bought my car, they had one on the lot without a wood steering wheel. It was a "base" GS, if there is such a thing. No navi, no ML, no wood steering wheel but there was wood elsewhere. So if you can find one of those, then you should be good. Good luck with the search.

Saw this one on eBay, not sure the condition, but $200 is better than $1000.

If you are benchmarking to a 2010 E-class, a 2011 5 series, or a 2011 Infiniti M then I agree with you. If you benchmark to the prior generation vehicles then I don't - GS was certainly better quality than the last E-class and the last Infiniti M. Probably a little short of the last 5er.

The 2011 GS better be a big step up in fit finish and materials to be competitive.

Dealers in all of Texas stock GS's in two option groups - both of them have the wood wheel. They told me a special order car could take three months to get - if they could get it at all. I searched every dealer in Houston and Dallas.

Did you replace it with an all leather wheel? The gray wood/leather is what I have. I've wondered how hard it would be to find an all leather wheel and the costs involved.

Right...and I imagine that since those are new* designs, they've upped their standards. The GS is stale (like it or not) and hopefully when the new design comes out, they'll up their standard. Lord knows Lexus/Toyota need all the good press they can get right now.

Interesting site. For all you under-powered V6 drivers, these guys will sell you a V8 engine for $15,000.

(joke for those without sense of humor).
